Artificial intelligence begins to "read" the code of life.

Artificial intelligence is increasingly entering areas previously reserved exclusively for biologists and geneticists. The latest example is the AlphaGenome, an AI model developed by Google's DeepMind team to help scientists understand how human DNA affects the development of diseases and the functioning of the body. Experts have no doubt: this is one of the biggest breakthroughs in modern genomics.
The human genome consists about three billion 'letters' of the genetic code, labelled as: A, C, G and T. Although we have been able to read the entire genome for years, interpreting it remains a huge challenge. Only about 2% of the DNA is made up of genes encoding proteins essential for life. The remaining 98% - called the 'dark genome' - was for a long time considered unimportant. Today, it is known that this is where many of the mutations responsible for diseases are hidden. AlphaGenome was designed to help understand this most mysterious part of our genetic code. The model can analyse one million letters of DNA at a time, predicting where genes are located and how the 'dark genome' affects their activity.

Unlike large language models such as ChatGPT, AlphaGenome does not predict subsequent sequence elements. It is a so-called 'sequence-to-function' model that examines how changes in the genetic code translate into biological consequences. Among other things, the model analyses gene expression - that is, whether a gene is active or silenced - and so-called 'gene splicing', a mechanism that allows an organism to make different proteins from a single gene. What is particularly important is that AlphaGenome can predict the effects of changing even a single letter in DNA, which is of great importance in the study of genetic diseases. According to Natasha Latysheva, research engineer at DeepMind, AlphaGenome can help identify which mutations actually lead to diseases and which are harmless genetic variants. This, in turn, could significantly speed up the diagnosis of rare diseases and the development of new therapies. Scientists around the world are already using the tool. Dr Gareth Hawkes of the University of Exeter is using AlphaGenome to screen for mutations that increase the risk of obesity and diabetes. Although genetic studies have identified many variants linked to these diseases, most of these are just in the 'dark genome'. With the AI model, scientists can quickly predict how these variants affect biological processes and then confirm these predictions in the lab. As Hawkes points out, this is a big step towards identifying new targets for drugs. Equally promising are applications in oncology. AlphaGenome makes it possible to distinguish between mutations that actually drive cancer development and those that are accidental. This could accelerate the discovery of new targeted therapies.
AlphaGenome is part of a wider trend of combining genomics, biomedical research and artificial intelligence. It was for the earlier AlphaFold system, which predicts protein structure, that the DeepMind team was awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. According to Google DeepMind representatives, we are standing at the threshold of a new era of scientific discovery. Although the AlphaGenome does not yet solve all the mysteries of human DNA, many researchers consider it a milestone that could fundamentally change the way we understand diseases and plan treatments.

Signal PRO - multiswitch installation (2x TV-SAT + 1x TV/FM) in one fibre optic cable!

The Dipol company presents a complete solution for the distribution of satellite, terrestrial TV and radio signals in multi-family buildings, based on copper and fibre optic cables.
Optical copper RTV/SAT installations in multi-family buildings
    Signal PRO system includes:

    • Fibre bus signal distribution equipment:
      • Optical transmitter TR-901 R69958. Thanks to WDM technology, it distributes the entire package of TV, TV-SAT and radio signals in 1 fibre. This reduces costs by reducing passive infrastructure components and installation time.
      • Optical receiver REC-109 R69958 converting optical signal to electrical signal, distributed in typical multiswitch bus. Equipped with LEDs indicating the level of the optical signal at the input of the device.
      • Optical splitters with 2, 3, 4 and 8 outputs, allowing the optical bus signal to be split and adapted to the building infrastructure.

    • Cascade multiswitches, 9 input (2x TV-SAT + 1x TV/FM), offered in 3 variants:
    • They meet the regulatory required level of shielding (Class A, cast housing). They are distinguished by a unique feature - LEDs indicating the load of each output.

    • Amplifier MS-900 R69900. Allows to extend the copper part of the signal bus and increase the number of multiswitches in the cascade.

    • Connections and fixings:
    • Enable installation of multiswitches with unprecedented density of the number of outputs in one RTV cabinet.

The offer is complemented by active elements for the distribution of signals from 1 satellite, terrestrial TV and radio:
    • multiswitch MS-508 R69508
    • TR-501 optical transmitter R69951
    • optical receiver REC-105 R69953.

All Signal Pro system components are covered by a 4-year warranty.

Installation diagram of a video intercom for a detached house with an additional IP camera.

When building a modern video intercom system, it should be taken into account that the video intercom can control the gate and the entrance gate. An app installed on a smartphone can be used for this. When installing a door station, the view from the built-in camera focuses on the caller. If the camera has a very wide angle of view, it is possible to observe the area in front of the entrance gate, but even if the door station covers such an area, it is usually insufficient.
An additional IP camera can be connected to the Hikvision IP video intercom system to cover the area of the entrance gate or the entrance gate and wicket. During or after answering the call, you can change the view from the main gate station to the additional IP camera and view the area in front of the gate. Thanks to remote operation via a smartphone, it is possible to open and verify remotely at any time, whether the entrance gate is open or closed.
Below a diagram of an IP video intercom installation for a single-family building is presented. The installation has been made on the basis of a single-subscription IP Villa DS-KV8113-WME1(C)/Surface G73632 door station in a surface-mounted version with a built-in camera and 2 relays to control the gate and entrance gate. The DS-KH6320-WTE1 G74001 monitor, equipped with a Wi-Fi interface, was installed inside the building. The observation of the area at the entrance gate was realised with the Hikvision IP camera DS-2CD1043G2-LIU K03029. An Ultipower N29978 switch equipped with 4 PoE ports in the 802.3af/at standard was used to power the gate station, monitor and IP camera. The system was connected to the internet network using a Mercusys AC12G N2933 router. The wicket was fitted with a Bira S12U symmetric door strike from the Hartte G74220 series with an adjustable jaw of up to 4 mm, which is suitable for 12 V DC or AC operation. A 12 V DC power supply M1820 was used to excite it.

AI-5 PRO splicer - even better fibre positioning.

The Signal Fire AI-5 L5872 splicer available from Dipol has been upgraded to the PRO version. The key change is the addition of 2 motors responsible for even more precise fibre positioning before fusion. This allows the splicer to position the fibres more effectively relative to both the jacket and the fibre core.
In addition, the new model has a modified software version that optimises the operation of the oven used to heat shrinkable splice covers. This has a positive effect on the overall operating time of the device on 1 battery charge cycle.
The AI-5 PRO is distinguished from the AI-5 by the different appearance of the fibre cover.

Remote reading data from energy meters. LTE cat.1, NB-IoT and LTE-M are three mobile communication technologies designed for Internet of Things devices, but with different capabilities, bandwidth and applications. LTE cat.1 is the solution offering the highest throughput of the three technologies, allowing data transmission at moderate speeds and supporting more advanced devices such as energy meters, controllers or monitoring systems that require a stable and relatively fast connection. NB-IoT (Narrowband IoT) operates in a narrow bandwidth, consumes very little power and allows devices with low transmission requirements but running for many years on a single battery to communicate - ideal for sensors, utility meters and telemetry systems. LTE-M (LTE cat. M1) provides an intermediate solution, combining low power consumption with greater mobility and the ability to support more complex applications than NB-IoT, making it well suited to tracking systems, wearable devices or building automation components...>>>more
