Miniature BMI interface will be converting human thoughts into data.
Researchers at Switzerland's EPFL Polytechnic University have developed the first miniature brain-computer interface (MiBMI), which has extremely small size, low power consumption, high accuracy and versatility. These features make the system ideal for implant applications, where minimal invasiveness ensures safety and convenience both in the clinical context and in everyday life. MiBMI is a fully integrated system, with data recording and processing taking place on two small chips with a total area of 8 mm².
Brain-to-text conversion involves decoding neural signals generated when a person imagines writing letters or words. Electrodes implanted in the brain record the neural activity associated with hand movements, and the MiBMI chip processes these signals in real time, converting the intended movements into digital text. This technology enables people with motor impairments to communicate by just thinking about writing, while the interface converts their thoughts into readable text displayed on a screen.
Current BMIs record data from electrodes implanted in the brain and then send these signals to a separate computer for decoding. MiBMI chips record data and simultaneously process the information in real time, integrating a 192-channel neural recording system with a 512-channel neural decoder. This neurotechnological achievement is a consequence of extreme miniaturization.
In order to be able to efficiently process the vast amounts of information recorded by the electrodes, the researchers had to completely change their approach to data analysis. They discovered that brain activity when imagining writing individual letters contains very specific markers, which they called unique neural codes (DNCs). Instead of processing thousands of bytes of data for each letter, the microchip only has to process the DNCs, which significantly speeds up the system's operation while reducing energy consumption.
Work is already underway on the next generation of integrated BMI systems, going beyond handwriting recognition. The system is being tested in various applications, such as speech decoding and motion control.
DIPOL at Energetab 2024.
The Energetab international power industry trade fair is one of the most important meetings of leading representatives of the electric power and related sectors.
During the event we will present new solutions for CCTV monitoring systems (Sunell, Hikvision) and a wide range of signal measurement devices for CCTV, TV/SAT and fiber optic systems. Also, there will be plenty of proposals for those interested in GSM/LTE and TV networks, both in terms of workmanship and system design.
Dipol's participation in Energetab fair is an opportunity to present proven solutions, but also a number of novelties that will be used in teletechnical systems for the energy sector and beyond.
Our sales and technical experts will support you in the design and implementation of teletechnical systems.
An interactive stand, prepared specially for this fair, will allow you to verify the performance of our solutions. You will be able, among other things, to get acquainted with selected functions of cameras of monitoring systems, to perform splicing of optical fibers or conduct reflectometric measurements on a test transmission path.
More details and information about the fair available here.
Multiswitch system in a multi-family building.
Multiswitch systems responsible for supplying DVB-T2 digital terrestrial TV and DVB-S/S2 satellite TV signals to apartments are an excellent complement, as well as an alternative to cable network systems in multi-family residential buildings. It is the end-user who decides what programs to watch by purchasing the appropriate satellite receiver or by signing an individual contract with one of the digital platform providers. TERRA products, dedicated to use SMATV systems, are primarily top-class equipment covered by a four-year warranty. TV systems based on those components guarantee great signal reception for long.
An antenna mast had been mounted on the roof of a multi-family building, on which a 120 cm DIPOL DPL-120 A9684 satellite dish was hanged, providing reception of signals from two satellite positions: Hotbird 13°E and Astra 19.2°E. For terrestrial DVB-T2 TV in the VHF and UHF bands respectively, antennas used were: Dipol 4/5-12 A0140 (horizontal polarization), Dipol 44/21-60 Tri Digit A2670 (horizontal polarization), while for FM radio the antenna Dipol 1RUZ PM B A0221. The TV system uses the SA-91L R70901 amplifier for 9-input multiswitches of the MV-9xx series. The amplifier is equipped with eight satellite inputs and one DVB-T2/Radio input (left out in this case due to the use of CAD-824 Alcad R82620 channel amplifier in the system). The main functions of the SA-91L R70901 amplifier include amplification and equalization of IF signals for 8 polarization-band pairs, as well as powering other elements of the system, such as LNBs or multiswitches. The use of a die cast housing helps eliminate external interference (Class A shielding level). An obvious advantage of the MV-9xx multiswitches are different signal levels at the outputs. This guarantees a similar signal level in subscriber outlets located at different distances from the device. In addition to that, the correction of the coaxial cable attenuation is provided. Signals with higher frequencies have higher levels, so the cable attenuation is properly compensated. Switches in multiswitches instead of potentiometers allow for very precise adjustment of the signal level and correction of cable attenuation. This solution also ensures long-term stability of the set parameters, regardless of temperature changes at the place of installation. MASTER crimped connectors makes the solution more professional.
Advantages of using Terra multiswitch system:
No transfer of the point of a single failure to the entire system; a branch system means that if one device fails, only the users directly connected to it are deprived of the signal. In the case of cascaded systems, the failure of one multiswitch results in the failure of the entire network, which is highly problematic to diagnose.
The die cast enclosures of multiswitches and associated components truly meet the requirements for Class A shielding.
Terra devices have compact dimensions. Larger multiswitches have outputs arranged in two rows, which reduces their size and allows for more optimal cable routing out of the multiswitch.
All Terra SMATV system components are covered by a 4-year warranty.
Can multiple IP cameras be connected to a single cable?
A common problem in monitoring systems is the need to add another camera at the camera point without the ability to run additional cable. This is possible with special PoE switches, called extenders, such as ATTE xPoE-4-11A-HS N29810 or xPoE-3-11A N29814.
Using xPoE-4-11A-HS to install an additional camera in an existing camera point
Note that the total power consumed by the cameras connected to the extender (PoE receivers) cannot exceed the power budget offered by the switch that powers the entire line:
in 802.3af standard there is about 13 W available
in 802.3at standard there is about 25 W available
in PoE Passive there is a maximum of 40 W available
To make sure that the cameras will work properly, you need to calculate the power balance, taking into account the power consumption of the cameras (note that the cameras consume more power at night, which is due to the illuminator switching on). In addition, you need to take into account the losses on the power cable, which depend on its cross-section, length and the voltage value on the PoE line.
Connecting the operator's fiber optic gateway to the building system.
Many multi-family buildings are equipped with an FTTH system. In most cases, the fiber-optic cable is brought to the apartment and terminated near the front door, usually in a dedicated multimedia box.
After signing a contract with an ISP, their recipient receives a fiber-optic gateway (commonly referred to as a modem or router), which should be connected to the building's fiber optic cable. Often it is impossible to install the gateway in the multimedia box – the problem is usually the size of the device or the lack of power supply in the box itself. Poor WiFi signal coverage can also be a problem, if the gateway has an integrated access point. Often it just seems natural to place the device in the living room, which is usually the multimedia center of the entire apartment.
DIPOL has introduced fiber optic patchcords with a length of 10 meters, terminated with SC/APC plugs. These patchcords – available in black and white – allow easy extension of the building system and connection of the end device, e.g. in the aforementioned living room.
Single-mode patchcord PC-2272W-10 WHITE SC/APC – SC/APC, simplex, G.657.A2, 10 m L3212272W_10
Patchcords L3212272_10 and L3212272W_10 are manufactured based on single-mode fiber G.657.A2 compatible with all fibers used in FTTH systems. At the same time, they are more resistant to bending than stanard fibers (G.652.D).
Additional reader with keypad in Hikvision modular IP video door entry system.
Below, a sample diagram of an IP video door entry system based on a modular door station is shown. Mounted on the entrance side, the station consists of DS-KD8003-IME1(B) G73652 main module, DS-KD-M G73662 Mifare standard card reader, DS-KD-KP G73668 numeric keypad module, as well as surface frame and protective canopy. Opening the wicket from the inside when exiting is possible in several ways. One is to exit using the key or the handle, if it is installed in the wicket. If there is no such option, a local opening button can be installed for the gate station to release the electric strike for a time specified by the installer. The last option used in the diagram is to mount a card reader with a built-in keypad, such as DS-K1104MK G75659, which should be connected to the door station over the RS-485 bus. With such a configuration, if RFID tags or designated opening codes are added to the system, it will be possible to open the gate from both, the entrance and exit sides using the described methods. Opening by codes or tags, is supported only by the modular gate station. In the case of the Villa system, with the installation of an additional reader, only opening by tags will work (codes are not supported). The installation described here uses one DS-KH6320-WTE1 G74001 indoor monitor. However, the entire system can be expanded to the maximum number of monitors supported by the door station.
