Space reflectors can increase the efficiency of photovoltaic farms.

Engineers at the University of Glasgow have presented an idea and modeled the operation of reflectors orbiting 1,000 kilometers above Earth. Their function will be to reflect sunlight to increase the efficiency of photovoltaic farms.
Simulation models showed that placing 20 reflectors made of a special, web-thin material in orbit 1,000 kilometers above the Earth's surface could reflect sunlight for an additional two hours each day on average. This would help increase the efficiency of solar farms especially after sunset, when the demand for electricity is at its highest. The efficiency of this solution could be further increased by adding more reflectors or increasing their size.
The team has developed an algorithm to determine how the reflectors should be positioned and targeted to most effectively capture the sun's rays, maximizing additional light in the early morning and late evening. The reflectors should maintain an orbit close to the Earth's terminator line, the boundary where daylight on one side of the planet passes into night on the other, and work in a pattern known as the Walker constellation. It is commonly used in satellite communications systems.
The researchers suggest that 20 reflectors could generate an additional 728 megawatt hours (MWh) of electricity per day – as much as is produced by a huge traditional photovoltaic farm, (the size of several thousand hectares), and the cost of the system would be much less.
The idea of orbiting solar reflectors is not new. In the late 1920s, there was discussion of illuminating cities with light reflected from space. Documented work only occurred once, when Russian researchers launched from the MIR space station a 20-meter reflector covered with aluminum foil that was unfolded by a central mechanism. During the tests, the reflector was expected to reflect light equivalent to the power of 3 - 5 full moons, which illuminated the surface of the Earth with a diameter of about 4-5 kilometers. Despite short-term success, the project ultimately failed due to cost and technical difficulties.

Why two network cards in an NVR?

NVRs Sunell are equipped with two network cards to further secure the network. Each network card can be independently addressed, set a different mask and network gateway, giving you the following options:
  • segmentation of network traffic allows you to separate data flowing from IP cameras from the Internet and other devices on the local network. This increases the security and reliability of the system, as the camera network traffic is isolated from other devices
  • network balancing – NVRs can use both network adapters for network load balancing. When there is a large flow of data from IP cameras, it is possible to split the traffic into two networks to effectively manage the available bandwidth. Cameras can be addressed according to the first or second network card as needed.

There is often a need to replace the existing intercom (video) system with a newer one, offering greater functionality and quality. Such an upgrade may require replacement of the cabling, e.g. with twisted pair cables for IP systems. The Hikvision video intercom operating in 2-Wire standard is of help. It has the same functionality as the 2nd generation Hikvision IP video intercom. Building a compact system involves connecting of monitors (e.g. G74019 DS-KH6320Y-WTE2) and the main door station module (G73646 DS-KD8003Y-IME2) to the G74824 DS-KAD706Y distributor via a 2-wire bus. The 2-Wire bus allows for both, powering the devices and establishing communication. After connecting the distributor to the LAN network, each device (monitor, door station) is visible in the network under a separate IP address. The iVMS-4200(v3) application is used for configuration. In addition to the basic functionality i.e. video calls, the system controls opening the wicket and controlling the entrance gate, also can also be controlled with the Hik-Connect application from a smartphone. It can redirect a call to the phone while the tenant is absent and remotely open the wicket or gate.

HDMI-DVB-T/C digital modulator.

The conversion of A/V signals into high-frequency RF signals, meaning the introduction of signals from all kinds of signal sources, such as computers, players or surveillance cameras, into a terrestrial TV system, is an operation that requires the use of a so-called modulator. Such device has one or multiple A/V inputs (RCA, HDMI, etc., depending on the type) and an RF output (commonly known as the "antenna output), and it allows you to watch the video and listen to the sound on the selected channel on all TVs connected to the system. For the receiver, the program added to the system is just another terrestrial television channel.

When an investor wants to display images on multiple TV sets coming from two different signal sources, the infrastructure must be prepared accordingly. HDMI to IP converters are often used in this type of system. As a standard, there can be no more than one HDMI transmitter in one network. This is due to the fact that the manufacturer has uploaded the same network configuration on each transmitter. The user is not allowed to make any address changes to the HDMI devices. Therefore, if two transmitters are used, there is a conflict of IP addresses (resulting in incorrect network operation).

It is possible to perform such an installation but it requires the use of a managed switch and the creation of dedicated VLANs. In the above example, the user, by changing the VID and PVID parameters (responsible for the settings of virtual local networks on the switch), can create four scenarios for video display.
Note that the bit rate of the compressed signal at the output of the transmitter is about 15 Mbps and transmission is done via a multicast connection. The most popular HDMI converter is a device with code H3613, enabling the connection of additional receivers with code H3613R.

Fiber optic CCTV system – serial topology.

Often installers ask about the possibility of connecting several camera points (poles) with a single fiber optic cable. Yes, it is possible, but it should the choice of more experienced installers, equipped with the appropriate tools.
The cable that is run through the points has to have an adequate number of fibers - at least 2 fibers for each point. For example, 5 poles will need at least 10 fibers, so the application of a 12J cable (with12 fibers), or, for redundancy, a 16J or 24J cable. However, an excessive redundancy is not recommended as it will cause unnecessary effort.
One of the options to run a multi-fiber cable through the camera point is to cut it on the pole, separate two fibers for connecting the local transmission device and splice the rest of the fibers led to the next pole. This leads to the following conclusions:
  • the more redundant fibers the cable has, the more "redundant" work the installer will have to do, as all fibers must be spliced,
  • the first pole will require splicing all fibers of the cable,
  • the last pole will require splicing only the fibers used on that pole.

The approach that involves cutting the fibers to splice them may turn out to be pointless, but many installers with fast and professional splicers choose this option as it is independent of the cable structure. The cable is simply cut and the fibers are spliced with no attention to its reinforcement, the central tube diameter and whether it is present at all. Moreover, this allows for the use of most of the fiber optic joint boxes available on the market.

Installers who opt not to cut and splice the fibers can choose a method that requires a little more experience. With the MSAT-5 L5925 tool, it is possible to make an incision in the optical fiber tube, and then take the fibers selected out for a given camera point and splice them with pigtails. The other fibers then remain intact. Note, however, that this method may not work with every type of fiber optic cable.
