Project Silica – data will survive 10,000 years.

We all generate sizable amounts of high-value data (our histories, medical, industrial, scientific data, etc.). The existing data storage media do not provide a low-cost and efficient solution. Magnetic media degrade over time, which results in replacement and maintenance costs. SSDs, although increasingly common in data centers, also have a finite lifespan. There is also the issue of the growing need to power ever larger disk farms.
Microsoft and its "Silica" project is the world's first technology designed and built from the ground up to meet humanity's needs for long-term, sustainable data storage technology. The future will be data storage in a glass quartz structure with the advantages of low cost, durability and resistance to electromagnetic interference. Glass offers a lifespan of tens of thousands of years. This eliminates the costly cycle of periodically copying data to new storage media. Moreover, the storage process itself is 100% passive and does not require the supply of any energy.

In the current version of the glass media, about 7 TB of data can be stored on it. This is not a value that matches the largest traditional drives (these can reach capacities more than 10 times larger), but it is enough to implement this solution in an actual data center. The lifetime of such a carrier is as much as 10000 years. Project Silica was originally intended to serve Microsoft exclusively in its data centers, but plans have changed and commercial carriers are being considered.

Signal Fire AI-9 – hardware update.

The Signal Fire AI-9 L5875 fiber optic splicer has been upgraded to a new hardware version. Two major changes include the splice shield heater and the power supply system.
The splicer's heater has been redesigned from a mechanical point of view – it is now possible to close the heater's flap automatically when placing fibers in it – no manual closing is necessary. This speeds up the work somewhat and allows more accurate positioning of the shield in the heater. Moreover, a tray is attached to the heater, which can be used to place the heated shields while they cool down.
In the power supply system, the use of an external adapter allowing the transition from a DC 2.5/5.5 power supply plug to a 4-pin DIN4 connector has been discontinued. In the current version, the power supply plug is connected directly to the device.

Digital modulators are devices that modulate the input signal supplied to the HDMI connector in DVB-T COFDM or DVB-C QAM standard. The sources of the signal can be, among others: media players, DVRs, Blu-ray players, PCs or STB decoders. The devices offered by the DIPOL provide full support for the HDCP protocol, so this means that it is possible to introduce into the TV system a signal from any HDMI source.
In modulators without this technology, regardless of the compatibility of the connectors, the transmission of the source material may be completely blocked, or only lower resolution and lower quality transmission will be possible.
A new digital modulator WS-6990 R86701 supporting the HDCP protocol has been added to DIPOL’s offer.
Modulator WS-6990 HDMI – DVB-T/C with adjustable bitrate (1..20 Mbps) – HDCP support
WS-6990 R86701 is a single-channel modulator. This means the ability to connect a single signal source to it and modulate it into a DVB-T or DVB-C or ISDB-T digital multiplex. In addition to the ability to select modulation at the RF output, the digital modulator is equipped with an adjustable bitrate function in the range of 1...20 Mbps.

Below, a sample diagram of an IP video door entry system based on a modular door station is shown. Mounted on the entrance side, the station consists of DS-KD8003-IME1(B) G73652 main module, DS-KD-M G73662 Mifare standard card reader, DS-KD-KP G73668 numeric keypad module, as well as surface frame and protective canopy. Opening the wicket from the inside when exiting is possible in several ways. One is to exit using the key or the handle, if it is installed in the wicket. If there is no such option, a local opening button can be installed for the gate station to release the electric strike for a time specified by the installer. The last option used in the diagram is to mount a card reader with a built-in keypad, such as DS-K1104MK G75659, which should be connected to the door station over the RS-485 bus. With such a configuration, if RFID tags or designated opening codes are added to the system, it will be possible to open the gate from both, the entrance and exit sides using the described methods. Opening by codes or tags, is supported only by the modular gate station. In the case of the Villa system, with the installation of an additional reader, only opening by tags will work (codes are not supported). The installation described here uses one DS-KH6320-WTE1 G74001 indoor monitor. However, the entire system can be expanded to the maximum number of monitors supported by the door station.

Basics of IP addressing – part 5: network ports.

Protocol port or protocol port number is a term related to TCP/IP protocol. They are used on the Internet to distinguish between various services and connections. Protocol ports are marked with integers ranging from 1 to 65535. Some ports (from 1 to 1023) are reserved for standard services, e.g.:
  • 53 - DNS
  • 20 - FTP - data transfer
  • 21 - FTP - sending commands
  • 67 - DHCP - server
  • 68 - DHCP - client
  • 79 - Finger
  • 70 - Gopher
  • 80 - HTTP

With the port number, it is possible to identify not only the processes, but also well-known services running on distant systems, so it can be considered as a service identifier. For example, if a host is also a web server, it has to open the port 80 when web resources have to be shared with another host.
