5G network on aircraft.

The European Commission has updated its decision on frequencies used for mobile communications, on board aircraft. With the new regulations coming into effect, airlines will be able to equip their planes with cellular transmitters, both those using 5G connectivity and older standards. This will allow passengers on board aircraft within the EU to use their cell phones.

In 2008, reservation of frequencies used for mobile communications took place, which would only be available in the skies. The update to the executive decision is intended to enable the deployment of 5G networks in aircraft. Aircraft will connect to terrestrial networks via satellites, allowing passengers to use the Internet, but also make calls and send text messages. Comparing this with a "standard" terrestrial network, the difference in operation (aside from frequency) will be the distance between the base station and the first exchange. In the case of terrestrial connections, this section uses fiber-optic infrastructure, when the user (passenger) will connect to the BTS located in the aircraft, the connection to the first exchange will be made via satellite. Probably, this will impose some restrictions on the maximum bit rate of connections, slightly higher than standard delays will also be experienced.

In 2014, the European Union's Aviation Safety Agency ruled that airlines need not require airplane mode to be turned on.

LTE antenna for multiple bands.

When selecting an antenna, it is important obtain information on the location of the nearest transmitters emitting signals in a particular standard. Such information is provided by customer service offices of the respective operators. It is also worth to verify the frequency of emission assigned to a particular service. If the base station supports several bands, e.g. LTE800, LTE180, LTE2100, and the router has an aggregation function, a broadband antenna should be used. The antenna should be chosen according to the distance between the reception site and the operator's transmitter.

Cleaning of optical fiber connectors.

Attenuation is the main problem of signal transmission over long distances. For optical fibers, the attenuation may depend on various factors, such as splicing accuracy or exceeding the minimum fiber bending radius. It often happens, however, that despite the correct connection and wiring, the attenuation of the optical path is still too high.

What is an often forgotten and neglected attenuation factor is dirt on the ferrule face of the fiber optic connector or adapters. It happens to be the main and only reason for signal transmission problems.

DIPOL offers two universal automatic cleaning devices of the renowned Japanese brand NTT. NANOCLEAN L59161 and L59162 tools make cleaning of the above components possible. The key advantage of this solution is the ability to clean pigtail connectors plugged into a front panel of a switchboard without having to remove them from the adapter. The connector is plugged in from the inside, and the cleaning device from the outside, to clean the pigtail ferrule face and the adapter sleeve at the same time. These tools should be of interest to most installers of fiber optic networks, particularly those who are obliged to provide measurement reports on their installations.

TERRA channel amplifiers – when to use?

One of the main problems in building and launching SMATV systems is large disparity in signal levels between individual multiplexes. While in smaller DVB-T2 systems this is of little importance (due to small distances from the antenna to the receiver and a small number of outlets), in the case of more extensive systems such differences are crucial for the proper operation of the entire system. The key reason for the different signal levels for individual DVB-T2 multiplexes is the non-uniform attenuation of frequencies in different environments, e.g. air, coaxial cable, etc. These disparities increase with the distance and frequency.
