Record transatlantic connection.

Facebook, Microsoft, and Telxius, telecommunication infrastructure company, have just finished laying fiber optic cable connecting the USA and Europe. The transatlantic cable called Marea is 6600 kilometer long and is located at an average depth of 5 kilometers below sea level. With a bandwidth of 160 Tbps, it will provide the foundation for the fastest transatlantic connections.
The Marea cable crosses the Atlantic in a different place than the previous cables. The new location has been chosen to increase reliability and minimize the risk of damage due to natural disasters such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions or storms. An open design of the system is expected to deliver fruit in the form of easy expansion, increased throughput and lower maintenance costs in the future.

The popularity of all types of cloud services and video streaming is growing at a very fast pace. The biggest limitation in their delivering is the connection to users on other continents, with too little bandwidth. For this reason, Microsoft and Facebook have decided to build their own intercontinental connection. This private initiative, in addition to the record bandwidth, has also beaten the speed of installation. The works commenced in August 2016, and the launch of the service is scheduled for early 2018. The period is three time shorter than in the case of previous transatlantic projects.

The winners of the 16th DIPOL's Summer Holiday Contest 2017.

This year the number of accepted works exceeded 600, which was an absolute record in the sixteen-year history of the photo competition. Once again, we were surprised by the high level and amazing diversity of submitted photos. Once more, we thank you for your great interest and we warmly encourage you to take part in the next edition of the "Engagingly about Antennas" contest. We invite you to see the gallery of the works of the laureates of this year's edition.

WLAN networks in warehouses.

Racks, shelves with goods, machines and other equipment in warehouses strongly affect the propagation of wireless signals. However, WLAN in a smaller warehouse can often be based on an AP located in the central part of the facility (e.g. TP-LINK EAP110 N2562).
In the case of larger facilities, one should take into account the location of objects which are obstacles to the propagation of the signal. Proper coverage can be achieved using a number of access points, for example EAP110 N2562. The number and locations of the APs should usually be determined experimentally. Because all the APs form a single network, there will be no need for additional logging when switching between them. The distinguishing feature of the solution with EAP110 N2562 APs is EAP Controller Software enabling centralized configuration and management of the wireless network composed of multiple EAP devices (via a web browser). The functions include real-time monitoring, graphical analysis of network traffic and batch firmware updates.

New version of SatNet software!

Free SatNet v3.6.3 software allows users to design medium and large SMATV multiswitch systems based on TERRA devices in a graphical form. The SatNet app can determine signal levels in all outlets and verify if they are compliant with standards, and decide whether to use equalization function of the amplifiers. This allows the designer/installer sitting in front of the monitor to predict what devices will be needed to distribute the signals and what parameter settings such as gain or cable attenuation compensation will be required. The settings are fully compliant with actual implementations.
The SatNet application is used by installers and designers around the world. The update includes a number of useful features:
  • possibility of taking into consideration antennas for FM (88-108 MHz), DVB-T VHF (174-230 MHz) and DVB-T UHF (470-790 MHz) bands;
  • possibility of adding devices combining signals from different TV and radio bands: antenna triplexer DC015L, antenna amplifier MA080L R82018, multiband amplifier ma400 R82520;
  • adding Triset-113 to the list of available cables;
  • possibility of adding adjustable RF attenuator TRA-03 R50150;
  • improved AA (Automatic Adjustment of levels) and AOS (Adjustment with Optimizing Structure) functions for easier design and implementation.

Identification schemes for fibers in multi-fiber cables.

Terminating the end of a fiber optic cable with multiple fibers, the installer should pay attention to the appropriate order of the fibers spliced in the distribution frame or installation box. There are several standards addressing that issue, and although there are not general regulations, consistency in this field allows installers to avoid problems in the event of network maintenance or expansion.
Installing optical cabling, it is worth to implement one of the European standards or the proprietary solutions used by cable manufacturers or large telecommunications operators. The table below shows the most common standards for the layout of fibers in optical distribution frames.
It is worth remembering that the adoption of a specific standard saves time and money in the case of expansion of the optical network. Connecting new links, the installer does not have to empirically verify the order of the fibers in the existing distribution frames and avoids problems with erroneous connections (especially when the splices are placed in closed patch panels without the possibility of viewing the order of the fibers).

Independent video outputs in CCTV systems.

Digital video recorders are usually equipped with several video outputs, either to match various monitors or connect additional ones. There are three popular types of video outputs, HDMI, VGA and BNC. The BNC output is usually independent, but most DVRs provide the same video on the HDMI and VGA outputs. The HDMI and VGA outputs can be configured independently only in some top models. The example is Hikvision DS-7616HUHI-F2/N M75916 with the possibility to configure different layout of channels (cameras) for each output, with any assignment of cameras connected to the DVR/NVR.
