The future of YouTube by Google.

On the occasion of VidCon conference, Google, the owner of YouTube, announced the launch of a new video format called VR180. The current VR solution (360 degrees), hailed as a revolution in multimedia, has a major drawback: the price of hardware and software for video recording and processing.

Accordingly to its name, VR180 video provides half of the viewing angle of VR360, i.e. 180°, half of the sphere. Companies such as Lenovo, LG, or Yi have declared support for the standard and the launch of affordable hardware. The creators of the VR180 video will also be able to edit it using familiar applications like Adobe Premiere Pro.

Google’s Daydream mobile VR division will provide VR180 certifications for camera manufacturers. VR180 certified cameras should already be available in winter of this year.

HDMI to IP converters/extenders - no need for separate power supplies!

The units of Signal HD H3624 converter/extender support PoE 802.3af standard, which means that they can be powered from a PoE switch, e.g. N29980. This solution simplifies the installation of the units and makes it more elegant, eliminating the need for connections to AC outlets. The Signal-HD HDMI to IP converter/extender set enables the user to connect remote (up to 100 m) source of HD content to HD-enabled television/monitor, using one CAT5e/6 cable.

A big advantage of the IP solution is the fact that the signal coming from the transmitter may be applied to an Ethernet switch to split it among multiple H3625 receivers.

Is it worth investing in good fiber optic cleaver?

Proper cleaning and cutting of fibers prior to joining them is extremely important both in the case of mechanical and fusion splices. The following two pictures show the form of light streams coming out of fibers cleft with a stripper with cleaving option (on the left) and precision fiber cleaver F1-6000 L5801 (on the right).

Unwanted light leaks from properly cleft end face of a fiber are very limited - the stream is focused. In the case of improperly cut fibers, dispersion effects cause that the splice presents high attenuation, which can even lead to transmission failure. Fiber-optic fusion splicers are extremely precise (up to 0.1 degree) in the determination of the cleaving quality. Installers using mechanical splices can use the optical technique shown above, using e.g. the L5935 visual fault locator, but this method is suitable only for an approximate assessment of the quality.

New requirements for cables - CPR.

Since July 1st 2017 all installation cables are treated as construction products and subject to appropriate regulations. The new regulations require manufacturers to issue Declaration of Performance (DoP), as well as label their products meeting the relevant standards with the CE mark. The manufacturer, by drawing up their DoP, assumes the responsibility for the conformity of the construction product with the declared performance(s). EN 50575 standard specifies the requirements for the fire performance of cables which are used in permanent systems in buildings, i.e. power cables, control and communication cables, fiber optic cables.

Until now, the conductors and cables were treated exclusively as electrical products subject to product safety regulations under the Low Voltage Directive (LVD) and were subject to CE marking by the manufacturer. The new rules established by EN50575 impose on the manufacturers (also importers and distributors) the obligation to commission relevant tests to notified certification bodies/laboratories in order to obtain certificates confirming the fire resistance classes of their products and to issue Declarations of Performance (DoP) with the relevant Euroclasses. The Euroclass of a construction product (including power, control and communication cables) allows for its classification in terms of reaction to fire according to the same rules and criteria across Europe.

Hikvision IP cameras of EasyIP Lite series.

The EasyIP Lite series of Hikvision cameras provides high performance for affordable price. The series supports motion detection and video tampering detection (more advanced analytics features are available in other, higher series). The cameras from the series also provide corridor mode and possibility of defining one Region of Interest (ROI). There are models with resolutions from 2 to 4 MP, with fixed and varifocal lenses, as well as with motozoom control (marked with Z letter in the camera symbol, e.g. DS-2CD1621FWD-IZ). Models marked with F letter, e.g. DS-2CD1621FWD-I are equipped with slot for microSD card (up to 128 GB) and support ANR function. WD letters mean wide dynamic range (WDR, 120 dB). The users of Hikvision IP cameras and NVRs can use free Hik-Connect service, which provides remote access to the devices in the case of dynamic IP addresses, or allows for the use of domain names in web browsers. It is necessary to create Hik-Connect account and add the devices. The service can be operated via a web browser or applications (for PCs and smartphones).

5 MP video resolution in analog CCTV systems.

The next step in the evolution of analog video monitoring is the availability of solutions for systems with 5-megapixel image resolution. Thanks to higher resolution of such systems, they can either employ a fewer number of cameras (each camera with wide viewing angle can cover a larger area) or provide more detailed surveillance information. The available solutions are based on Turbo HD 3.0 concept, so the requirements for cables and passive components in the 5 MP systems are the same as for 2 MP and 3 MP versions. The cameras with lower resolutions as well as cameras operating in AHD and HD-CVI systems can also be used in the systems.
