Koreans in 7-Eleven pay with their hands.

7-Eleven, an international chain of convenience stores, has opened 7-Eleven Signature store in the Lotte World Tower in Seoul, equipped with a BioPay system using state-of-the-art IT solutions. This is the first such store in the world opened by 7-Eleven for testing the new technology, available only to Lotte employees. 7-Eleven is currently the largest franchise network in the world (in terms of number of outlets). It has stores in 19 countries, over 80% of which are in the USA, China, Thailand, Japan and South Korea.
BioPay are payment methods that allow consumers to make transactions by identifying themselves with a part of their body linked to a preassigned credit card or bank account. Among the different BioPay methods, the store uses HandPay option, which recognizes a person's unique palm vein pattern. This option is easier to use and more comfortable than traditional scanning of fingerprints or iris. The customer places his/her hand on a transparent support and the system recognizes it and charges the customer's account.

The checkouts in the new store are also automatic. Customers place their purchases on a conveyor belt, where the items are scanned 360 degrees to locate their bar codes. The prices are then tallied and appear on a monitor. The system will be further developed by integrating artificial intelligence solutions capable of identifying products without bar codes.

On June 1, 2017, starts the 16th DIPOL Summer Photo Competition "Engagingly about Antennas".

As every year, we wait for your pictures with a leitmotiv of antennas of any kind and shape. The works will be judged by a well known photographer and designer from Krakow, Mr. Pawel Zechenter. Additional distinctions will be awarded by our Marketing Department. You are welcome to submit your works! More info on the photo contest website.

SMATV system in a hotel.

Headends distributing satellite channels after conversion to DVB-T COFDM digital form are popular solutions used in hotels. Satellite channels can be a complement to terrestrial TV broadcasts or be the main or only source of programming in the system.
Digital Terra headend can be used in a wide range of hotels and other facilities with different number of rooms. Thanks to the conversion of DVB-S/S2 signals into DVB-T COFDM standard, the satellite programming can be received by regular televisions, similarly to normal DVB-T broadcasts. Both the terrestrial DVB-T broadcasts and converted satellite channels can be easily distributed to the outlets via typical TV installations based on coaxial cabling.

An implementation of the headend in a hotel, shown in the diagram above, is a good example to illustrate the principles how to select appropriate elements for this kind of applications. The functions of the components are as follows:
  • at422 R82509 - twin-channel highly-selective tunable amplifier capable of filtering and equalizing levels of antenna signals in VHF-3 band. Each of the two independent paths can amplify one DVB-T multiplex;
  • at440 R82511 - is a four-channel highly selective tunable RF amplifier capable of filtering, amplifying and equalizing four digital multiplexes (DVB-T) broadcast in the UHF band. Each of the four independent sections can amplify different DVB-T multiplex. It means that one module can amplify four digital multiplexes;
  • TDX420 R81618 and TDX420C R81619 transmodulators are used for reception of DVB-S/S2 (8PSK/QPSK) signals, selection of desired channels from a transponder, and retransmission of them in COFDM format in chosen channel in VHF/UHF frequency range. Built-in CI interface for conditional access modules enables the R81619 transmodulator to operate with scrambled services. One panel can receive channels from two satellite transponders and convert them into two neighboring DVB-T multiplexes with maximum throughput of 31.66 Mbps (no PID filtering);
  • UP413 R82533 12 VDC power supply is dedicated for TERRA amplifiers, receivers, signal processing devices;
  • Splitters and taps enable division of the RF signal into subnetworks (e.g. for groups of rooms on each floor) and further distribution to individual outlets.

Viewing surveillance video on multiple monitors.

Larger video surveillance systems should provide access to surveillance video for a number of users in different locations. A solution that gives access to any video channels on several monitors can be based on a computer with a suitable number of video outputs and running iVMS-4200 software. The application supports displaying images on up to 4 monitors. The image on each monitor can be freely configured.

Video security system with Signal IP cameras.

The diagram below presents an IP CCTV system based on Signal cameras and Hikvision NVR, suitable for video monitoring of a house. Both the cameras and the DVR support H.265 video compression preserving the same quality of the recorded video as H.264, but requiring half of the disk space. For example, a 2 TB HDD can save recordings from 8 cameras with H.264 compression from 11 days, and in the case of cameras with H.265 compression the period extends to 22 days. The applied cameras, both the indoor HDV-200 K1816 and outdoor HDC-240P K1876 models are equipped with 2.8 - 12 mm varifocal lenses allowing for adjustment of the viewing angle within 90° - 26° range. The built-in IR illuminators ensure good visibility in low-light and no-light conditions. With the use of the POE-802.3AF/C M1896 DC-DC converters for powering the K1816 cameras, the whole installation can be powered from the N29982 PoE switch. The video streams from the cameras are recorded by the 8-channel NVR Hikvision DS-7608NI-I2 K22083. The TL-WR1043ND N3253 router allows the users to get access to the NVR via WiFi, local network, or the Internet.

Ideal surge protection.

Server rooms contain many computers and other network devices. They often represent significant components of the company assets. One of the biggest threats to computer systems are surges that may occur in Ethernet networks. They can not only destroy the hardware, but also the most valuable content - the stored data. Automatic backup systems can help in this field, but everyone should protect the source data and the equipment. Hence the need for surge protectors.
In many cases, specialists installing computer networks use solutions based on optical media converters, instead of typical protection measures lowering risks of voltage surges between systems with copper cables. Optical fiber is a transmission medium guarantying high bandwidth and being an ideal insulator. In addition, the isolating fiber optic links are much cheaper than solutions dedicated for really effective protection of networks with twisted-pair cables.

Choosing a pair of media converters for this purpose, the installer should take into account the cost effectiveness - a short-distance link can be made of OM3 multimode fiber and affordable multimode media converters. An example: two ULTIMODE M-023G L10025 converters connected with OM3 L3311 patch cord.

Selection of accessories for a RACK cabinet.

DIPOL e-Store offers a simple mechanism that provides list of compatible accessories for a selected RACK cabinet. When choosing accessories for a rack cabinet, the user should pay attention to their compatibility with the specific model of the cabinet. Some components may be dedicated to other models, e.g. with greater depth or with a different way of mounting the accessory (e.g. a fan).
The user should simply open the site with the required RACK, e.g. R912018, and then click on the "Add accessories" button in the right section (in the picture below the button is surrounded by a red line).

May 18, 2017 - the end of the spring training session for installers Today, the course on the configuration of managed TP-Link switches finished the spring training session. Over 800 people participated in this year's courses, a 100 more than a year ago. We thank the participants very much and congratulate them on the acquired theoretical and practical knowledge. All courses enjoyed great popularity, each, on average, with 24 installers. Further training session will be in the fall.
