Is it possible to print out a diagnostic laboratory?

Researchers at Stanford University have developed a method for carrying out low-cost diagnostic tests. A "laboratory" located on the palm will be able to detect an early stage of breast cancer and other deadly diseases, such as malaria or tuberculosis. It is composed of two parts. The first one is a silicone microfluidic chamber used to locate cells for testing. The second is a reusable electronic strip with electronic circuit that can be printed using an ordinary inkjet printer. The printing on a polyester surface is to be performed with a conductive ink. After connecting a battery, the "chip" allows for separating cells based on their inherent electrical properties. An electric potential applied across the inkjet-printed strip makes the cells, loaded into the microfluidic chamber, get pulled in different directions. The behavior depends on their "polarizability" in a process called dielectrophoresis.

As the testing process is easy, even untrained personnel should deal with the preparation of the device and its application. The next step should be a visit to the doctor who must interpret the results for further diagnosis and treatment, e.g. in a case of cancer. The non-invasive device can be extremely cheap, even at the level of one cent per chip. The method eliminating the need for using fluorescent or magnetic labels for tracking cells greatly improves precision and cuts the testing time. The device can be used to capture single cells from a mix, isolate rare cells and count cells based on cell types. With such a great potential, it could revolutionize the way of carrying out diagnostic tests. It also applies to basic and applied research, but according to a member of the team, the most important thing is that "Enabling early detection of diseases is one of the greatest opportunities we have for developing effective treatments".

Streaming high quality video to mobile devices.

Joining pigtails and fibers of different types/standards.

The experience of installers shows that different types of fibers cannot be spliced in an arbitrary manner. Generally, the whole transmission link should be composed of fibers of the same specification, e.g. G.652.D, G.657.A1 etc. However, it often happens that the installer does not know in advance what type of fibers is provided to the distribution frame/box.
It is possible to splice cables with G.657.A1 fibers with pigtails with A2 fibers. The reverse connections (A2 fibers in the cable, A1 pigtails) have much worse performance. The still most popular G.652.D fibers should not be spliced with G657.A2 pigtails, but can be joined with G657.A1 pigtails.

It is worth mentioning that the information is not a presentation of any standards or guidelines, but only some conclusions from the experience of installers splicing optical fibers. It is possible that some models of welding machines will allow for satisfactory results with theoretically incorrect combinations. On the other side, the universal and always legitimate approach is keeping one standard of fibers in the whole installation.

How to merge or clip surveillance video?

Along with VSPlayer, Hikvision supplies application for merging recordings - FileMerge, and for clipping them - FileClip. The first application is used when the required video coverage is contained in two recordings, the second when the needed portion of a recording is shorter than the entire video file. The applications have been designed for editing recordings performed by Hikvision devices, encoded in H.264 format, with mp4 extension. Operations carried out by the applications do not delete metadata such as watermark (it is allowed to combine recordings only from the same channel ) or information about motion. After merging operation, the watermark displays unchanged information on the actual time of the recording.
