A virtual Volvo showroom.

Microsoft and Volvo are collaborating on the use of HoloLens holographic technology. The Swedish automotive corporation wants to use it, among others, to show cars to prospective customers. The holographic technique is to change the approach of showrooms to presentation of Volvo cars. The demonstration of the HoloLens holographic computer was organized by the two companies at the headquarters of Microsoft in Redmond.
Thanks to the augmented presentation of a car, the customer will be able to see the car's chosen configuration at the selection stage, such as the color, equipment, rims. The holograms will also allow the customer to understand some special functions of the car, helping to make the final choice.

For more inquisitive customers, Volvo has prepared holograms showing the operation of drivetrains or even the movement of individual engine components. Another use of the system can be the application at the servicing stage. With suitable holograms, the servicemen can explain to clients some procedures needed to repair their cars.
Undoubtedly, the new technology has a great chance of a good reception by car dealers and their customers. The entire process of selecting and configuring the optimum vehicle performed on the actual size of its virtual model will be much more pleasant for both parties compared to the use of a sheet of paper or a computer screen. So, the next step will be the organization of Volvo showrooms with the special glasses for customers.

Easy installation of SMATV systems - radial multiswitches with 32 outputs.

On the satellite TV market there is a strong demand for multi-output radial multiswitches, but due to technological reasons only a few producers can meet stringent quality requirements. The market leader in this field is TERRA, which has launched in the market the new MR-932L (32-output) and MR-924L (24-output) multiswitches. An undoubted advantage of the MR-9XXL multiswitches is the division of the outputs into groups with diverse signal levels. With different lengths of the cables in SMATV systems, the diversification allows for equalizing signal levels in outlets located at the different distances from the multiswitch. Additionally, the multiswitches compensate the higher attenuation of coaxial cables at higher frequencies. To enable the use of the MR-9XXL multiswitches in systems with return channels, the manufacturer has equipped them with passive return paths (5-862 MHz).

Too low GSM signal in a home or other premises.

A basic scheme of GSM antenna system suitable for homes and businesses, allowing normal use of mobile phones in situations where the signal inside a building is too low for reliable communication, is shown below. The installation allows users to have phone conversations and use mobile Internet (GPRS) in the building. The advantage of this solution is to maintain the mobility of the phones - they are still connected wirelessly.
The list of devices used:
  • Trans-Data GSM/DCS/UMTS KYZ8.2/9.5 antenna A741030.
    • The antenna is responsible for receiving and transmitting signals from/to base station.
  • GSM repeater Signal GSM-305 A6765.
    • The device amplifies GSM signals. It should be noted that the amplification takes place in both directions - to and from the base station.
  • Two-way GSM splitter A6812.
    • The splitter distributes amplified GSM signals between two indoor GSM antennas.
  • Indoor antenna Trans-Data GSM/DCS/UMTS DW3-A A741001 or Trans-Data GSM/DCS/UMTS DW3-B A741002.
    • The antennas distribute GSM signals inside the building. The A741001 version has been designed for suspended ceilings, the A741002 model - for concrete ceilings (the cable laid on the surface).

Protection of the home LAN.

Nowadays the home network can include several computers, televisions, network drives, consoles, media players etc. Along with the expansion of the network and due to a considerable cost of the devices, the importance of network protection against overvoltages is much higher.
Voltage surges can come from both the AC power network and the signal transmission lines. The protection against overvoltages in the power network is provided by safety extension cords/strips with surge suppressors (varistors) and fuses. In the event of a voltage increase over a limit (typically 250 VAC), the fuses cut off the power for the connected devices.
The signal path based on twisted-pair cables can be secured by dedicated protectors, for example J2820. The condition for the proper functioning of this type of elements is their proper grounding.
The best and increasingly popular method of protection is the change of the LAN transmission medium from twisted-pair cable to optical fiber before the first device in the home network. This substitution results in a total galvanic separation of the local area network from the WAN and provides 100% protection.

The set of ULTIMODE media converters protecting all devices connected to a home LAN
In the diagram above, the home LAN is protected by the pair of L10021 media converters connected via the L31119 multimode patchcord. When selecting media converters, it is important to adjust their capacity to the parameters of the access network - in the case of data rates over 100 Mbps the suitable choice is to use gigabit devices, e.g. L10025. The type of the fiber should only be compliant with the media converters (multimode or single-mode), but due to short lengths, in some cases the user should remember about suitable attenuators. In the example, all the devices in the home have been connected to the AC power network via safety multi-outlet extension cords with surge suppressor ACAR P7ACAR P1316.

What an infrared camera sees?

"Normal" analog or IP cameras used in video monitoring systems capture visible and (usually in night mode) near infrared radiation (in total: 300-950 nm) reflected from the objects in the field of view. The sources of the radiation can be the daylight or artificial lighting systems, including IR illuminators. Thermal imaging cameras work properly without any additional source of lighting. Their principle of operation is quite different than that of traditional cameras. Each body with a temperature above absolute zero emits infrared radiation. Thanks to the relationship between temperature and the intensity and spectral characteristics of the radiation, taking into consideration the features of the emitting surfaces, the image from an infrared camera can show the distribution of temperature on the surfaces of the objects in the field of view, so it can be graduated in temperature scale divisions.

and the temperature image of the inside of an electric circuit panel (in false colors)

This enables the user to read the temperatures of the interesting points on the surface of various objects. Due to no lighting required for proper operation of the camera, the device remains invisible in the night (an intruder can be unaware of its presence). Such cameras are ideal for monitoring large areas with no or scarce artificial lighting (forests, ports, unlit parking lots, etc). Of course, thermal imaging cameras have some limitations. Adverse weather conditions such as fog, snow and rain suppress infrared radiation, which reduces the range of operation and temperature resolution (they "flatten" the temperature variation of the observed scene).

9/8 Multiswitch: TERRA MV-908L (active terr. path, w/o PSU)
9/8 Multiswitch: TERRA MV-908L R70858 has been designed as a component for medium and large 9-cable SMATV systems, also in multi-staircase buildings (with division into subnetworks). Used separately and powered from the local power supply R71465, it can also be used in individual systems with up to 8 outlets. The active DVB-T path has LTE filter for eliminating unwanted signals in 800 MHz band (791-862 MHz) coming from LTE services. The adjustment of the SAT IF and DVB-T (47-790 MHz) gain is made with dedicated switches. In comparison with potentiometers, this solution increases stability of the adjustments.
