DIPOL Weekly Review - TV and SAT TV, CCTV, WLAN

No. 33/2015 (Oct. 19, 2015)

The breakthrough on the road to replace silicon with graphene nanotubes.

IBM announced that they were able to eliminate one of the major problems standing in the way of the development of graphene transistors. Although high performance of the transistors, there were problems with connections - significantly larger than the transistors themselves. Smaller contacts caused increased resistance and a significant deterioration of parameters of the circuits. Researchers from IBM developed a new process of chemical bonding of the transistors with "wires" of a thickness of 10 nm, without an increase of the resistance.
Computer processors are made of silicon transistors. Due to predictions based on physical properties of silicon, the minimum size of the transistors is about 7 nm. The latest Intel processors are manufactured in 14 nm process technology, so they are approaching the limits of size reduction.

Nanotubes are supramolecular structures in the form of hollow cylinders. They are built from folded graphene with a thickness of 1 atom. They have a number of properties which can be used in nanotechnology, optics and electronics. The remarkable properties include high thermal conductivity and very high mobility of charge carriers.

Master BNC connectors for CCTV systems.

BNC connectors can be the cause of many problems in the implementation of CCTV systems, already at the installation stage. The reasons of the problems are uncertain connections. The situation is even worse in the case of outdoor installations, where various weather conditions (including temperature changes and water penetration) accelerate the speed of corrosion. It deteriorates the quality of video monitoring or even can stop operation of some channels. This is unacceptable, especially in the case of critical applications, such as bank or city video surveillance systems.

Appropriate design and excellent accuracy of MASTER connectors eliminates any problems with installing them on cables. They can be easily screwed on sockets, as well. Properly compressed connections are highly resistant to break, due to dual compression rings that also prevent entering of water from the side of the cables and this way protect the connected devices. The indispensable compression tool is either MASTER E80075 or universal MASTER E80078.

PoE 802.3at vs. passive PoE.

PoE (Power over Ethernet) is the name of a number of methods that allow for powering network devices through UTP/FTP cables. This way it is possible to power devices such as cameras, phones, switches, access points, etc. PoE solutions can be divided into two groups:
  • Compliant with standard - in 2003, the IEEE established 802.3af PoE standard, upgraded to 802.3at in 2009. 802.3at distinguishes between the first type (prior 802.3af) and the second type with maximum transmitted power of 30 W, nearly two times higher.

  • Main features of the standard:
    • transmission of power and data via a single cable reduces wiring and installation costs,
    • at least 100 m range (with appropriate cabling),
    • high security and and reliability - in typical conditions the risk of electric shock is not high (the voltage is below 60 V) and the technology involves auto-testing procedures,
    • protection of devices not compliant with the standard,
    • ease of installation,
    • backward compatibility with older versions.

Option A - violet color, option B - yellow color.
  • Passive PoE transmits power through selected conductors of UTP/FTP cable. The supplying voltage can be connected directly to the powered device or injected by a special adapter. There is no communication between the power source and the powered device - the power is provided continuously. The wiring is usually made according to option B of IEEE 802.3af (use of free pairs 4/5 (+) and 7/8 (-) in 10/100 Mbps Ethernet networks). The supplying voltage depends on the requirements of the powered PoE device, e.g. 5 V, 9 V, 12 V, 24 V or even 48 V. It should be noted that passive PoE solutions are not compatible with the 802.3at standard and are not recommended for use in professional networks.

Mechanical splices - questions and answers.

Installers beginning their adventure with fiber optics have many questions concerning fiber splicing. As we know, this job not as simple as in the case of copper cables. To dispel doubts about mechanical splices, we decided to answer the most frequently asked questions.
Fiber Optic Mechanical Splice: ULTIMODE FAST-MS1 [5 pcs.]
Mechanical splices ULTIMODE FAST-MS1
L5550
  • What is a mechanical splice? Mechanical splice is a component for joining two separate optical fibers, made with high accuracy allowing for precise and permanent positioning of the prepared fiber ends to minimize signal attenuation.
  • What tools are needed to make a mechanical splice? The installer needs fiber optic stripper L5905, precision fiber cleaver L5801, IPA solvent cleaner L5915, and dust-free Kim-Wipes L5913. Other very useful tools are visual fault locator L5935, optical power meter L5821, optical laser source L5825, fiber scraps trash can L5918 and scissors for cutting Kevlar(R) L5904.
  • What fibers can be to joined using mechanical splices? Mechanical splices can be used for joining single-mode and multimode fibers with buffer or jacket diameter of 250 μm and 900 μm.
  • What is the attenuation of mechanical splices? Properly installed mechanical splice has an attenuation of less than 0.15 dB. Practice shows that skilful installers using mechanical splices are able to achieve attenuation level identical with that of fusion splices. The loss of a splice depends on many factors, but mainly on the accuracy of the fiber cutting and the manual skills of the installer.
  • Are mechanical splices strong and durable? Mechanical splices are sufficiently strong and durable. However, they should not be exposed to longitudinal forces, therefore they should always be placed in specially designed compartments in installation boxes or distribution frames. Well-protected mechanical splices guarantee durability of the connections.

An example use of line crossing function in Fisheye camera.

Hikvision DS-2CD2942F-IS K1790 Fisheye IP camera mounted on a ceiling has viewing angle of 360°, mounted on a wall - of 180°. Cameras of this type are becoming increasingly popular because of the possibility of replacing several cameras with only one that covers the entire area. An example application can be video monitoring of a small grocery store. Such a camera installed in the right place can monitor the whole room. The Hikvision DS-2CD2942F-IS camera has additional function that can protect a "sensitive" area in the store - line crossing detection. After someone crosses the previously defined virtual line, the cmera triggers alarm signal that can be transmitted to a monitoring center running iVMS 4200 software or can directly turn on an optical and/or acoustic alarm installed in the store. The typical use of the virtual line in a store is protection of the counter/cash desk area. If anyone crosses the line in the absence of the cashier, the system automatically triggers an alarm.

Watermark on recordings from Hikvision DVRs/NVRs.

A watermark is a kind of marker for digital video and audio files. It is usually used to encode copyright, authenticity and integrity information into the main data. The recordings of Hikvision DVRs/NVRs include the information in each frame. The watermark information can be displayed using VSPlayer software, the player dedicated for playing back recordings from Hikvision devices. With the player, the watermark explicitly certifies the authenticity of a recording from a specific DVR/NVR.

The watermark contains the following information:
  • MAC address,
  • serial number,
  • channel number,
  • date and time of the beginning of the recording,
  • information on the model and type of the device.
