LTE broadband Internet on board of Lufthansa aircraft.

The largest German telecommunications company, and also the biggest telecom operator in the European Union, Deutsche Telecom AG, has teamed up with satellite operator Inmarsat to create European Aviation Network. The system is intended to provide access to the Internet aboard scheduled flights, using LTE technology. German airline Lufthansa will be the first carrier to benefit from the new solution in 2016. In 2017, the system should be made available for testing purposes to other airline carriers.
The idea of the European Aviation Network
The system will operate on the basis of 300 base stations with a range of 80 km, which is eight times more than in the case of conventional LTE coverage, and MSS (Mobile Satellite Services) taking 30 MHz spectrum (2x 15 MHz) in S-band. The services of Deutsche Telekom’s ground network and Inmarsat satellite platform are combined above the height of about 3 kilometers. The switching between the ground and satellite services will be unnoticeable for the passengers. The system has been designed for high speeds so as to ensure passengers continuous and comfortable access the Internet on mobile devices via on-board Wi-Fi networks. The range of services will cover nearly all options, including video streaming, but without phone calls. The exclusion has been made not for security or technical reasons, but rather to ensure greater comfort for passengers, who could be disturbed by animated voices of traveling companions. Will the new system be successful and in line with expectations of demanding customers? We'll find out soon enough.

Optical receivers.

Optical receivers (nodes) convert optical signals into an electrical form. The electrical signals are provided to the subscriber's devices (forward path), and in the case of using return path (usually for broadband Internet), other signals are transmitted in the opposite direction. Optical receivers cooperate with optical transmitters sending modulated light over single-mode optical fibers. Such optical links can transmit multiple satellite and terrestrial DVB-T/DAB channels from the headend or master antenna even to distant locations, using PON technology.
The choice of the appropriate optical receiver depends on the required parameters such as:
  • sensitivity of the optical input - the higher the easier design and implementation of the network - with the same output power of the transmitter the links can be longer or the splitting ratio can be higher,
  • maximum output level of the RF (electrical) output - directly determines the size of the copper distribution system that does not require the use of additional TV amplifiers; devices with a level higher than 100 dBμV allow splitting the signal to a few tens of signal lines,
  • remote configuration and monitoring of the device - more advanced models can be remotely managed and monitored using dedicated software or the universal SNMP protocol.
Recently DIPOL has introduced TERRA OD-005P R81760 optical node. The FTTH receiver is a component of TV antenna systems involving fiber optic technology. The optical receiver features high sensitivity (-6...0 dBm), thus it can be used at the end of comparatively long optical links or with low-power transmitters. The maximum RF output level of 107 dBuV is suitable for distribution of the channels via passive splitters/taps to multiple outlets (up to 50 or so), without a need for an additional amplifier.

Professional WiFi networks in buildings.

DIPOL has extended the product range of WiFi devices by TP-LINK access points of EAP series. They provide flexible and secure solutions for the implementation of wireless networks that are easy to install and manage. The APs can be easily mounted to walls or ceilings. WLAN configuration and management are simplified through centralized management software. TP Link EAP devices also provide captive portal and automatic RF management, making them ideal for high-density, demanding business environments, such as campuses, hotels, shopping malls, offices.
EAP Controller Software enables centralized configuration and management of the wireless network composed of multiple EAP devices. The functions include real-time monitoring, graphical analysis of network traffic and batch firmware updates.
The EAP series consists of:
  • N2562 - Wireless Access Point TP-LINK EAP110, standard N 300 Mbps (2.4 GHz), passive PoE
  • N2564 - Wireless Access Point TP-LINK EAP120, standard N 300 Mbps (2.4 GHz), PoE 802.3.af

Captive portal provides one convenient method of authentication for Wi-Fi guests. A captive portal requires users to perform certain actions (such as viewing and agreeing to an acceptable use policy or entering a password) before network access is allowed. The required action must be verified by a server or customized database prepared by the administrator.

Fiber optic subscriber lines - installation of a distribution frame/box.

Due to an increased use of RACK cabinets in multi-dwelling units, the distribution frames often have the form of 19" RACK boxes/panels. The example of such an optical distribution frame is ULTIMODE MT-524 L5124. The presented implementation involves the application of L7102 cables and the popular single-mode pigtails PG-52S2 L35522.

The splicing operations have been performed with the use of EasySplicer L5810 fusion splicer. Worthy of note is the fact that the L35522 pigtails have loose tube construction. In this case, it is recommended to remove the 900 μm coating at a slightly greater length, and use the holders dedicated for 250 μm fibers. It eliminates any instability when placing the fibers in the splicer (the 900 μm holders are intended for fibers with tight buffer construction).

The knowledge of the meaning of symbols in the various names of the cameras greatly facilitates the process of their selection. Hikvision company uses a range of different names and markings for PTZ, IP, and analog cameras, as well as DVRs/NVRs. The meaning of the symbols in the names of Hikvision IP cameras is given below.

EXIR infrared technology.

Hikvision IP cameras with housing type 2, 3 and T have IR light sources made in Exir technology. The sources based on the new light-emitting technology have up to 30% higher efficiency compared with traditional LED arrays. Additionally, they produce LED light in the form of a rectangle in order to fit the camera's field of view (with 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio). This further improves the efficiency of the lighting and eliminates the excessive light intensity in the central part of the scene, typical for majority of IR illuminators. Exir illuminators ensure much better luminance uniformity, including the corners of the scene, at the same time reducing light pollution in the surrounding environment.

Documentation of construction process with Hikvision camera. Hikvision IP cameras have the ability to sequentially take pictures (Snapshot function). This useful function allows e.g. to create a history of the progress of construction of any facility, such as apartment house, school, shop, sports facility etc. This solution enables the user to save a large amount of disk/server space, while ensuring that the construction process is well documented. The time interval can range from 1 s to 7 days.
