E-skin and a laboratory on the credit card.

Two innovative solutions in the field of medical diagnostics were recently presented at the Elsevier's 4th International Conference on Bio-Sensing Technology in Lisbon, Portugal. One of them was "electronic skin" (e-skin) capable of measuring heart pulse and blood pressure, the second a diagnostic device of the size of a credit card, giving an instant reading of blood and saliva samples. The diagnostic tool is very simple to use - the user should just press the button and then place the sample in the circle drawn in the lower right corner of the card and wait for the digital readout. The device displays the result of the analysis, which can then be sent to your mobile phone. In turn, the biosensors that are a part of the "e-skin" can measure and analyze the selected parameters to inform the patient about the blood pressure, sugar, and hormone levels, as well as to verify the presence of bacteria in the body.
"We’re on the cusp of an entirely new era – not just for bio-sensing, but for measurements in healthcare and diagnostics generally," said Professor Anthony Turner, the leader of the projects. "Until now, we have been used to going to a doctor, who endows us with some wisdom and retains information about us, and then waiting to see if we get better. Modern sensors and telecommunications are rebalancing this power; in the future, patients could have the information, while physicians provide a service."
The revolutionary device is the result of collaboration between the swedish University of Linköping and non-profit organization Acreo, active in the field of modern technologies. At present, the team is looking for corporate partners to start mass production. The initial price of such portable lab has been estimated on only 5 Euro, but it should ultimately fall to 0.5 Euro, which will enable a very cost-effective diagnostics. This is a step to ensure that patients and doctors in developing countries can access affordable medical tests. In the future, such miniature diagnostic card could be attached, for example, to antibiotics, helping to determine which one is the most effective for the treatment of a patient.
"E-skin" is an electronic detector worn on the body as an adhesive bandage. Professor Ting Zhang from Suzhou Institute of Nano-tech & Nano-Bionics unveiled at the conference a new type of "e-skin", developed based on flexible electronics and nanotechnology. With its unique ability to detect small changes in pressure, the "electronic skin" can monitor physiological signals, measure blood pressure and heart rate. Scientists believe that the new material can in real time diagnose the disease and assess the health state of the patient immediately. The device is thin and flexible, so it can be worn as an adhesive plaster or contact lens and can send information to the mobile phone of the patient.
"Cardiograms" obtained from the "electronic skin" sensor
These inventions reinforce the belief that in the future biosensors may revolutionize many areas of our lives - in particular the diagnosis of diseases at an early stage of development.

High quality LTE rejection filters from TERRA.

Ordinary mobile phones use 900 MHz and 1800 MHz frequency bands. The rapid development of mobile services has led to the acquisition of a part of the TV "digital dividend" (the frequencies in the 791...857 MHz range, so called LTE 800) by cellular operators. The antenna systems for reception of DVB-T broadcasts installed in the previous years are very susceptible to interference from LTE transmitters. The channels most endangered by the interference are the currently highest TV channels - 59 and 60. In the case of the channel 60 (782-790 MHz), the gap to the LTE border, so called guard band, is only 1 MHz (790-791 MHz). To eliminate the impact of LTE transmitters on DVB-T reception, there have been developed and patented special LTE filters, for indoor and outdoor applications.
LTE Rejection Filter: Terra LF004 (mast-mount, 5-790MHz)
LTE Rejection Filter: Terra LF006
Mast-mount ceramic LTE filter
TERRA LF004 R82008
LTE rejection filter for indoor use
TERRA LF006 R82007
The Terra LF004 device is the highest quality ceramic filter. In comparison with other solutions available in the market, it features nearly ideal frequency response. Due to the fact that the border of the "downlink" of LTE services is located only 1 MHz from the border of the highest DVB-T channel, the appropriate response can be guaranteed only by ceramic filters. The Terra filter is recommended for suppressing signals with frequencies above 790 MHz in S/MATV systems without channel amplifiers.
The problem of interference caused by LTE networks may affect all users of terrestrial TV - including those who receive programs on channels much lower than those mentioned above. Strong signals from local LTE transmitters can overdrive antenna amplifiers, blocking reception of DVB-T broadcasts. The good practice is to use rejection filters eliminating all unwanted signals at the input of any TV antenna system.

How to transmit HDMI signals over long distances?

The Signal-HD H3608 HDMI to fiber optic converter allows for long-range (up to 20 km) transmission of HDMI signal (also in HD quality) via a single-mode fiber. Simultaneously, it ensures remote control of the HDMI source device by converting and transmitting commands from its IR remote control in the opposite direction.

Transmission of HDMI signal using Signal-HD H3608 converter and optical link
The kit is ideal for connecting an NVR, satellite receiver, media player, Blu-ray/DVD player, PC etc. to a remote monitor/television (or to a number of monitors/TVs - the HDMI signal retrieved from the optical signal can be split by HDMI splitters, e.g. H3214). The converter may also be useful at universities e.g. in order to display images from remote computers in lecture halls.

Ideal surge protection!

One of the biggest threats to computer systems are surges that may occur in Ethernet networks. They can not only destroy the hardware, but also the most valuable content - the stored data. Hence the need for surge protectors.
In many cases, specialists installing computer networks use solutions based on optical media converters, instead of typical protection measures lowering risks of voltage surges between systems with copper cables. Optical fiber is a transmission medium guarantying high bandwidth and being an ideal insulator. In addition, the isolating fiber optic links are much cheaper than solutions dedicated for really effective protection of networks with twisted-pair cables.

Choosing a pair of media converters for this purpose, the installer should take into account the cost effectiveness - a short-distance link can be made of OM3 multimode fiber and affordable multimode media converters. An example: two ULTIMODE M-023G L10025 converters connected with OM3 L3311 patch cord.

Applications of SATEL GPRS-T4 reporting module.

The GPRS-T4 module is a device dedicated for use in intruder alarm systems for the purpose of reporting and messaging via GSM networks, to 4 phone numbers. This modern module has 8 programmable inputs and 4 outputs that can be also used for control of various devices from up to 64 phone numbers. The module is programmed, locally or remotely, with the dedicated GPRS-SOFT software. The applications include remote control of up to four devices, such as gates, barriers, door entry and alarm systems etc. The control of electrical devices is possible with the use of the G7055 relay modules. A change of the input status results in sending event codes to the monitoring stations or notifying selected telephone numbers by means of SMS message or CLIP service. This makes it possible to supervise operation of various devices, including alarm control panels without telephone communicator. The inputs of the module can be programmed as digital or analog ones (for connecting e.g. temperature, humidity/moistness/flood sensors). Thanks to the analog inputs with two programmable voltage thresholds, the module can execute functions which are used in automation systems and notify the users when any of the thresholds is exceeded.
