Artificial pacemaker like a grain of rice... Is it a breakthrough in medicine?

Researchers at Stanford University, under the direction of Ada Poon, developed a method of wireless power supply for devices placed deep in the human body. This technology can be used to power pacemakers or any other stimulators and sensors. The miniaturization possible due to the elimination of batteries can be a "quantum leap" in the field of medicine. Advanced tests have shown that the radiation used is safe for human health.
The first device based on the new concept of power supply is a pacemaker of the size of a rice grain. The device is wirelessly powered from a credit card size element placed outside the patient's body.
The developed technology is based on electromagnetic radiation. Until now, taking into account the distance between the transmitter and receiver, the electromagnetic field has been divided into "near field" and "far field". The latter is the "normal" electromagnetic radiation used in any radio communication, so it cannot be used in live organisms for energy transmission due to safety limits and low efficiency. "Near field" technology is used e.g. to recharge electric toothbrushes or even hearing implants. Due to a very short range, it could not be used to transfer energy to implants located deep inside the human body, such as cardiac pacemakers.
The team of Ada Poon decided to combine the both types of the fields, forming a so-called "mid-field". The "mid field" waves can reach any implants in the human body, with radiation levels safe for the human health. The developed energy source appropriately forms the waves so that they are not significantly reflected or absorbed by the tissues and can reach the implant at the sufficient level.
The wireless pacemaker charging system was successfully tested on a pig and a rabbit. Currently, the researchers are preparing to carry out the first tests on humans. Assuming the success of the tests, it will take a few more years to fulfill all formal requirements necessary to bring the system to the commercial market.
The possible breakthrough in medicine does not only involve the miniaturization of the currently used devices, "less surgery" and better life comfort for patients. The technology may change the methods of treating various diseases and disorders. The existing pharmacological treatments can be supplemented or replaced by various kinds of stimulation of nerves or muscles, in a virtually non-invasive manner. The developers of this technology believe that the next step will be the creation of a new generation of programmable microchips capable of monitoring any life functions, sub-miniature electro-stimulators placed directly in the brain, as well as drug-eluting devices implanted into specific areas of the human body.

How to convert audio-video signals into digital DVB-T channels?

A baseband audio-video signal coming from any A/V device can be easily distributed in an antenna system in the form of DVB-T channel. Depending on the requirements, the solution can be based on one of the dedicated devices: DVB-T modulator Signal-350 R86350, DVB-T modulator TERRA mdx420 R82518, or MPEG-2 encoder Terra MD-331 R81713 and DVB-T modulator Terra TRX-360 R81709. DVB-T modulators converting analog audio/video signals (connected via RCA jacks) into DVB-T channels provide them in SD resolution/quality.

The MD-331 R81713 module has been designed for use in the MMH-3000 headend (in the Base Unit UC-380 R81700). This encoder converts analog video/audio signals coming from analog cameras, video players etc. into MPEG-2 coded transport streams. The transport streams can then be fed into the TRX-360 R81709 DVB-T modulator (COFDM) and distributed in a RF network as channels in the DVB-T multiplex. Two MD-331 modules and one TRX-360 can distribute 6 SD channels within a single DVB-T multiplex.
The mdx420 DVB-T modulator is a professional device designed for combining additional audio/video signals into shared antenna systems. The signals may come from cameras, multimedia players, computers, DVD players, satellite receivers etc. The device has two audio/video channels (two independent sets of A/V inputs for connecting two A/V sources). The output DVB-T RF channel carriers the both A/V signals in a single multiplex.
Signal-350 R86350 converts the input A/V signal into a DVB-T channel. The device is intended for use with one source of baseband video signal (CVBS) and LF audio signals (L+R). The modulator has also been equipped with USB port allowing for recording the source material in .ts format and playing back the same or other material prepared in this format. This solution allows, for example, to distribute TV commercials on a selected channel in a hotel or hypermarket TV system, and playing them on any televisions - without a need to use additional media players or PCs.

How to dim the bulb without getting out of bed?

The most frequent use of Exta free modules is remote lighting control. In the diagram below, the RDP-01 F5301 wireless dimmer is controlled by the F5112 2-channel remote control. The set allows for switching on/off and dimming/brightening the main light source in the room. Such functionality is particularly useful for the elderly or disabled people, who find it difficult to move around the room.

The order of fibers in optical cables.

Terminating the end of a fiber optic cable with multiple fibers, the installer should pay attention to the appropriate order of the fibers spliced in the distribution frame or installation box. There are several standards addressing that issue, and although there are not general regulations, consistency in this field allows to avoid problems in the event of network maintenance or expansion.
Installing optical cabling, it is worth to implement one of the European standards or the proprietary solutions used by cable manufacturers or large telecommunications operators. The table below shows the most common standards for the layout of fibers in optical distribution frames.
It is worth remembering that the adoption of a specific standard saves time and money in the case of expansion of the optical network. Connecting the next links, the installer does not have to empirically verify the order of the fibers in the existing distribution frames and avoids problems with erroneous connections (especially when the splices are placed in closed patch panels without the possibility of viewing the order of the fibers).

Hot Spare

function in Hikvision NVRs. Higher models of Hikvision NVRs, e.g. DS-7732NI-ST K2432, have been expanded with additional functions that are especially useful is larger IP CCTV systems. One of them is the Hot Spare function increasing the tolerance of the systems to failures of Ethernet networks and improving their overall reliability.

The application of the Hot Spare function in IP CCTV network composed of Hikvision NVRs.
In the case of a connection failure, the surveillance data is saved by the spare NVR.
The system should be backed up by one additional NVR. After activating the Hot Spare function, the NVR acts as a redundant recorder. In normal mode, it does not save anything - it works only in the case of a damaged link between any of the "main" NVRs and the corresponding switch, taking over the recording function. When the communication is restored, the missing recordings are transferred to the main NVR (synchronization). The Hot Spare function can be used in networks with up to 32 NVRs.
