Cell phone - modify or discard?

The technical and technological progress constantly drives the mobile market. Cell phones are quickly becoming obsolete due to insufficient processing power, short operating time per battery charge etc, or simply they get damaged and are uneconomical to repair. So, why not to build a phone out of elements that, if necessary, can be replaced? This fantastic concept - Phoneblocks - is popularized by Dave Hakkens. The Danish designer came up with the idea of a mobile phone divided into multiple blocks that could be freely configured and replaced.

Phoneblocks - the phone built with electronic "blocks".
The only non-replaceable part of the phone is to be specially designed motherboard.

If any part of the phone breaks down or gets old, it can be replaced without having to change the entire phone. Phoneblocks allows for flexible configuration of the blocks, for example, the user can maximize the battery at the cost of the camera or Bluetooth module, or install a better camera, processor, display... . The idea must therefore satisfy those who want to be in possession of all the latest and best components, as well as those who expect from the phone only specific functionality.
Video presentation of the "Phoneblocks" concept
However, the Phoneblocks concept, though beautiful, may be impossible to implement. Today's phones are real technological masterpieces. To accommodate all the components in a slim device, the designers employed by the electronic giants are spending countless hours, days, and months. A lot of time takes the development of the software managing all the hardware components. Effective communication between the different parts is possible due to proprietary solutions tailored for individual product lines. For example, it's hard to imagine a simple connector capable of both transferring data between the CPU and RAM and supplying power from the battery to every component, as shown in the vision of the Danish designer.
However, technical problems are not everything. The road to the success of the idea may be blocked by large corporations that make profits from the cyclical changes of the phones by the customers. The production of a modular phone requires large investments, and the originator does not want funding from big corporations. Dave Hakkens managed to gain support from many people, it is visible e.g. on the Thunderclap platform created to promote innovative projects. Does the idea has any chance of success? If not entirely, it might become a stimulus for the development of new products by companies that have the potential for undertaking new and ambitious ventures. That we wish the author.

OM3 fibers.

Although single-mode fibers are cheaper than multimode ones, the lower price of multimode active devices makes this kind of solutions still very popular in the market. New standards of multimode fibers (OMx) ensure increasing performance of the optical medium. Currently, multimode fibers compliant with OM3 standard are replacing the older OM2.
OM3 patch cords and pigtails are made in a distinctive azure color
The multimode fibers used in the cables are OM3 50/125 and can be used for transmission in the I or II transmission window (850/1310 nm). The attenuation (IL) does not exceed 3.5 dB/km in the first transmission window, and 1.5 dB/km in the second transmission window. OM3 standard provides higher data throughput over greater distances than its predecessors. The transmission speed of 10 Gbps is possible at distances up to 550 m, and higher speeds, such as 40 Gbps and 100 Gbps can be reached at distances up to 150 meters (OM1 and OM2 standards do not allow for such fast rates).
A comparison of multimode fiber standards in terms of transmission capabilities (max range of transmission at a specified data rate) is shown in the table below.
Data rate /Standard 100 M 1 G 10 G 40 G 100 G
OM1 2000 m 275 m 33 m - -
OM2 2000 m 550 m 82 m - -
