No. 27/2012 (Aug. 27, 2012)

When will we have to replace our televisions? - H.265 (HEVC).

On July 15-20, 2012, 450 delegates from 26 countries met in Stockholm to approve and issue a draft standard for High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). First commercial products based on this standard are expected in 2013. They will form a new generation of multimedia devices.

The new format roughly doubles the video compression levels of the popular H.264/AVC standard, which means that HEVC video files with the same quality take only half the disk space and can be distributed at half the current data rates.
The new format has been under joint development by the ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) and ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group (VCEG). In 2010, the organizations established a Joint Collaborative Team on Video Coding (JCT-VC), which sped up the development of HEVC. The double increase in compression efficiency is possible due to advanced algorithms requiring several times more processing power. The standard also provides parallel image processing tools, which will be especially important for encoding and decoding high-resolution video.

HEVC, also referred to as H.265 or MPEG-H Part 2, will be capable of carrying Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) up to a resolution of 7680 × 4320 pixels (8K, 4320p), i.e. with 16 times the number of pixels of 1080p HDTV.
Experts predict that in 2015 video data will account for 90 percent of all network trafic. The growth will be particularly visible in mobile networks having to launch more video services within the available spectrum. The development of HEVC together with LTE technology will solve the problem. As a result, we may expect faster development of streaming television. The standardization body is also working on a new kind of 3D video compression format suitable for 3D video systems not using 3D glasses, which should be completed by 2014.

The implementation of UHDTV will take a little longer, due to the need for a completely new content prepared in the new technology. Anyway, after the adopting of the final HEVC standard, which is planned for 2013, we may need to replace our "almost brand new" FullHD televisions in several years' time...

How to power 16 IP cameras?

IP cameras, in addition to the benefits associated with the transmission of high-resolution images, can be powered via twisted-pair cables, using PoE technology (Power over Ethernet). The method is ideal for supplying power from a central point, such as the server room, which is often very convenient in medium and large CCTV systems.

The application of 16-port passive PoE panel M1611 in a CCTV system with 16 IP cameras
The POEP1611B M1611 panel is a passive device used to supply power via UTP cables to terminal devices equipped with PoE ports. With the included AC/DC adapter (input 100-240 VAC, output 48 VDC / 120 W), it can power up to 16 PoE devices. M1611 is a passive device i.e. transparent for the data. The maximum range of supplying PoE devices is 100 m. The panel is intended for mounting in a 19" rack cabinet.

Multiswitch system for 189 outlets, with a bus topology.

A building developer in Krakow intended to provide residents with access to digital terrestrial and satellite television.
The first building that has been built in the housing development has 6 staircases, each with 20 to 60 apartments. The total number of the outlets in the rooms is exactly 189. Due to the size of the network and the structure of the building, the investor decided to use proven solutions based on Terra multiswitches.
The architecture of the building suggested bus topology with 5 coaxial cables carrying signals from satellite dish and terrestrial antenna system, both placed on the roof, to the basement, and then to each of the staircases (at the basement level). The cables to subscriber outlets located within a staircase run in a star topology, from the box in the staircase basement.
The distribution system includes amplifier for 5-input multiswitches, Terra SA 501 R70501, which also supplies power to all active components of the system. The bus is split into the staircase subnetworks with the use of SS-520 R70518, SS-515 R70517, SS-510 R70516 taps providing signals to MSV multiswitches with suitable number of outputs.
Before injecting into the multiswitch system, terrestrial TV signals are amplified and equalized by a set of Alcad channel amplifiers.
Thanks to the application of a single satellite dish ( A9658 with Quatro LNB A98266) and one antenna array for terrestrial broadcasts ( A2670 plus A0710 for TV, A0221 for FM), the building looks more elegant.
More on bus topology in multiswitch systems can be found in this passage.

High quality BOX camera with new Effio-E DSP.

DIPOL offers now M11194 camera based on 1/3'' Sony Exview HAD II CCD (650 TVL in color) and enhanced Sony Effio-E DSP (CXD4140GG). The improvement of the quality is manifested above all during operation with IR illuminators.
The improvement of the image quality obtainable in u-cam 650 M11194 camera in IR mode
The camera has the ability to control the day/night function using one of two twilight sensors. One of them is built into the camera, the second (additional) can be connected when the camera is placed in a housing. By locating the sensor in a suitable place, the installer can prevent multiple switching of the camera mode around the threshold light level in situations with changeable light at night (caused e.g. by passing cars).
Day/Night Box Camera: u-cam 595 (550TVL, Sony EXView CCD, 0.01 lx)
The included accessories: twilight sensor and mount, camera base, power cable

The camera also incorporates mechanically switching IR cut filter (ICR). This considerably influences the image quality both day and night. During the day, when the camera uses the infrared filter, the colors are vivid and natural. At night, the IR filter is removed and the camera is naturally sensitive to IR light.

Fiber-optic CCTV system in a building.

Extensive CCTV systems are increasingly employing fiber optic transmission. Long transmission range, immunity to electromagnetic interference and lightning surges, lower costs of the cabling - are the main advantages of fiber optics.
The video streams from megapixel cameras are transmitted via fiber optic distribution cable ULTIMODE BS L7724, designed for cutting out windows and easy access to fibers. The fibers can be branched directly to individual cameras without the need for splicing within the riser of the building. The fibers are terminated with KeyQuick connectors from Keyfiber - inexpensive, reliable, and easy to install.
Each camera has been connected via Ethernet media converter ULTIMODE M-207M L11521 (100 Mbps) changing the electrical signal into modulated light transmitted via one single-mode fiber.
The core of the system is NUUO NVR Titan NT-4040(R) mounted in a rack cabinet together with gigabit switch N29958 and media converters grouped in 19" rack adapter L5215 equipped with two power supplies (redundancy).
The NVR Titan K4204 can record H.264 video streams even from 64 5-megapixel cameras.

Coverage of the London 2012 Olympic Games on multiple HD televisions. Traditional methods of displaying TV broadcasts and other video content on multiple televisions include solutions based on splitters, HDMI cables, HDMI extenders which allow for distribution of HD signals in several areas. These solutions are flexible, but the areas (distances) are strongly limited by the HDMI standard. More complex systems may also be vulnerable to failures (many active devices and connections).
Another solution, based on DVB-T modulator Signal-751 R86751, is presented below. The source HD signal coming from any device equipped with HDMI output is converted into RF channel in DVB-T standard...

Power supply for CCTV systems. There are several ways of powering CCTV systems, such as the application of local power supplies, a central power supply, or the use of mixed solutions. Centralized power supply allows for a solution based on UPS and/or buffer power supply, increasing the reliability of the system. Below, we present some practical solutions...

How to safely connect to the Internet from a neighbor? The houses are at the distance of 15 meters. Five years ago they were connected by twisted pair UTP cable attached to a messenger wire. The connection worked well, but the nuisance for users was the need to disconnect it during storms. Without this precaution, at least once a year the NIC cards in the computers were damaged by lightning surges.
For this reason, the neighbors decided to change the transmission medium - they chose ULTIMODE Home System. Both buildings have been connected with...
