Will doctors see patients using kiosks?
In February this year, the American telecommunications giant Sprint signed a cooperation agreement with HealthSpot company for the installation of HealthSpot medical kiosks called Care4Station. This way, a new form of health care organization has emerged in the global medical market.During the visit in the self-service kiosk, the patients can obtain basic medical advice, supported by diagnostic tests. If necessary, they get prescriptions or referrals for specialty consultations. The diagnostic equipment is based on M2M (Machine to Machine) technology - it is a set of sensors from which the data is transmitted to a support computer.
The patient is in contact with a physician via video conferencing. If therapy is needed, it may be given by a nurse serving as a direct care staff at the kiosk. In the first stage the kiosks will be installed in pharmacies, old people's homes, industrial plants.
The pilot program was implemented in Westerville, Ohio. The fee for a doctor's appointment via the Care4Station kiosk is 60 USD. During testing, the program was attended by eight doctors from the Central Ohio Primary Care Physicians.
Medical kiosk is a completely new approach to medicine, especially relating to diagnostics. Such system will reduce administrative costs, allow for better use of medical equipment and the doctors' time. It also may enable easier access to specialists, especially for residents of small towns.

In December 2011, British Prime Minister David Cameron launched a campaign for "3 million lives," designed to improve the quality of life of people with chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. The aim is to provide telecare for three million people over the next five years.
The results of studies conducted on a group of 6000 patients in a telecare program (diagnostics, remote control over the administration of drugs, etc.) showed a significant reduction in mortality. The number of emergency interventions dropped by about 20%, the number of medical visits by about 15%.
Telemedicine is one of the most prospective areas for the aging societies of Europe and the USA. WHO (World Health Organization) estimates that in 2015 the telemedicine market will be worth about 18 billion dollars.

CCTV system in a Norwegian hotel.
The management of the workers' hostel in the municipality of Gjerdrum (Klampenborg settlement) in Norway decided to invest in a video monitoring system. The requirements for the installation were primarily concerned with the improvement of the fire safety (also by observing the smoking ban in all areas), getting general knowledge about the movement and behavior of people, protecting the storeroom, eliminating the ingress and egress of unauthorized vehicles.Preview of surveillance video on two computers |
The installation has been carried out by Uslugi RTV SPIN Boguslaw Ogan.
The BNC connectors on cameras have been protected with the use of self-amalgamating tape. So protected high quality Platinum connectors will ensure long-term durability. Due to the timber construction of the building there was no problem with fixing the cables and mounting the cameras.
Preview of the video from the DVR is possible on every computer in the LAN, over the Internet, and through mobile phones running iVMS4500 application. In addition, one of the images can be viewed on the TV in the lobby.
The cameras operate in harsh temperature conditions
Concerns about the quality of the signals, resulting from the fact that the CCTV cables were placed in plastic trays together with power 230 VAC cables, proved unfounded. The CAMSET 100 M6100 cable with 92% braid coverage efficiently prevents interference. The construction of the system has been simplified by the use of Pulsar M18286 power supply with five outputs protected against short circuits. Despite difficult weather conditions in Norway, the reliability of the system is absolute.
Terra company has developed two solutions based on MMH-3000 headend that allow for distribution of any television channels regardless of their broadcast frequency, with the use of the old wiring. The both solutions, employing appropriate modules of the headend, shift the original channels to lower ones. It is possible to convert channels from the upper part of the UHF band to lower channels, even in the VHF band (above 170 MHz).
The CT-311 R81715 channel converter is used to change the original analog TV / DVB-T or DVB-C RF channel in order to ensure optimum channel plan in the distribution network, or - in the case of older cabling, to shift the original channel to a lower one. The converter does not change any parameters of the original signal except for the RF channel, so the output channel width is identical with that of the input channel. It means that the module should be used rather within UHF range (IV and V band, channel width 8 MHz). To use this module for channel conversion of a DVB-T multiplex from UHF to VHF (band III, ch. 6-12), the DVB-T receivers should have option to change the default channel width in the VHF band from default 7 MHz to 8 MHz (available e.g. in Signal HD-527 A99252 receivers).
More advanced TTX-311 R81714 modules can also convert the channel frequency, but they are additionally capable of demultiplexing the whole DVB-T multiplex. It allows for processing the stream, i.e. changing the content and physical channel width of the new multiplex. This way, the channel width in the BIII band can be set to 7 MHz, so the new multiplex will be searched automatically by every DVB-T receiver. However, such a change means the necessity to limit the bandwidth of the output stream by eliminating one of the channels that form the original multiplex.
How to safely connect to the Internet from a neighbor?
The houses are at the distance of 15 meters. Five years ago they were connected by twisted pair UTP cable attached to a messenger wire. The connection worked well, but the nuisance for users was the need to disconnect it during storms. Without this precaution, at least once a year the NIC cards in the computers were damaged by lightning surges. For this reason, the neighbors decided to change the transmission medium - they chose ULTIMODE Home System. Both buildings have been connected with ULTIMODE polymer optical fiber POF-22D L6521 in PE sheath, with ULTIMODE POF-100MC L6213 media converters on both sides. The connection is 100% immune to lightning surges and ensures throughput up to 100 Mbps.
POF connection provides immunity to lightning surges
ULTIMODE Home System is a solution for subscriber networks in homes and offices, based on polymer optical fibers (POF - Plastic Optical Fiber). A complete range of devices enables every subscriber to get access to high quality network services such as broadband Internet, video streaming, VOD, video conferencing. The solutions based on plastic optical fibers are much more flexible, can be successfully installed and reconfigured by the end users.

How to calculate the required capacity of buffer battery in a surveillance system?
EN 50131-6 standard defines the principles for power supply in alarm systems. The systems should have two independent power sources. The main power source, connected to AC power network, should be used only by the system. The second source is usually composed of maintenance-free rechargeable batteries, often located in buffer power supplies. The needed capacity of buffer battery ensuring proper operation of a system for the desired time can be calculated from the formula:
Q = k * ( Ia * Ta + Ib * Tb )
where:
- Q [Ah] – needed capacity of the rechargeable battery
- (k=1.25 for Ta < 24h) or (k=1 for 30 < Ta < 72h) – factor depending on the time period of the system in buffer mode
- Ia [A] – total current drawn by components of the surveillance system
- Ta [h] – desired backup time
- Ib [A] – current drawn by alarm actuators
- Tb [h] – desired alarm period
How to choose the components of IP CCTV system?
NUUO, a manufacturer of IP CCTV systems, provides a calculator that helps installers to select appropriate components of IP video surveillance systems. The web application has three tabs:
- By Camera Parameter (choosing appropriate NVR on the basis of camera parameters) - the input parameters include the number of cameras (channels), image resolutions of the cameras, frame rate, compression (video format), image quality, the nature of the observed area (Scenario eg, highway, parking, train station), recording intensity (Hours per day), and retention period (Days). The program will calculate the total bitrate generated by the cameras, and the total capacity of disk storage needed to record the data streams. Depending on the number of cameras and the bandwidth, the Server Recommendation list suggests possible solutions based on NUUO software , NVRmini K4108, K4316 or NVRTitan K4204.
- By Product &Hardware (selection of cameras for a chosen NVR) – after inputting the set of parameters as above, the application will check whether a selected NVR meets the requirements.
- Client PC Recommendation (configuring client PC) – both NVRmini, NVRTitan and the NUUO software installed on a computer (NVR server) provide client application for remote connection to these servers. With this tab, the user can determine the kind of the processor and RAM capacity needed to remotely manage the CCTV system.
Using the calculator, the installer can prepare the optimum list of devices and components without the risk of unpleasant surprises.
Access point integrated with antenna.
Wireless devices integrating active components (access points) with antennas are still gaining popularity. They are connected with computers directly via twisted pair cables (UTP/FTP), instead of traditional coaxial cables (between wireless modules and passive antennas) with lengths limited to several meters (due to attenuation of RF signal). The UTP/FTP cables can be long up to 30 m (it depends on the power requirements of the device and capacity of the power supply using PoE option). Usually LEDs inform about the operation status of the device.Outdoor access point TL-WA5210G High Power 2.4 GHz. Wireless data transmission can be performed in AP, AP Router, WISP, or WISP Client mode. The device is equipped with a high gain antenna, which, together with the electronic board, is put in a weather-resistant housing. Thanks to the antenna with 12 dBi gain, high output power of the transmitter (27 dBm) and high sensitivity of the receiver, the device allows to create long-range, stable and efficient wireless connections. | |
