DIPOL Weekly Review - TV and SAT TV, CCTV, WLAN

No. 01/2012 (02.01.2012)

Meeting of the visionaries.

The ticket for LeWeb 2011 cost $2500. The conference, with so expensive entrance cards, was held in Paris on December 7-12, 2011 and gathered more than 3000 people from 60 countries.

LeWeb is the world's most prestigious meeting dedicated to the Internet. It is a place where the greats of the Internet talk about plans for the future, newly established companies present their technologies to the public, and young people with brilliant ideas look for "business angels". So, the most creative people of the world discuss and exchange ideas, plan new businesses.

Some of the speakers and companies that were presenting their concepts and ideas: Eric Schmidt - Google, Sean Parker - Napster, Facebook, Founders Fund, Kevin Rose - Milk, Andrey Andreev - Badoo, Dennis Crowley - foursquare, Brian Chesky - Airbnb, Daniel Ek - Spotify, Phil Libin - Evernote, Mike McCue - Flipboard, Dave Morin - Path, Kevin Systrom - Instagram, George Whitesides - Virgin Galactic, Axel Dauchez - Deezer, Bill Gross - Idealab, Wendy Lea - Get Satisfaction.
If someone wants to predict what new Internet ventures will be most important in 2012, it is a much easier task now, after analyzing the presentations and the areas of activity of the companies. The mainstream tendencies are clear - social media and mobile applications.

Milk Inc "is making delectable little tidbits made of code", foursquare is a location-based social networking website for mobile devices, Airbnb is developing short-term booking of apartments, Path offers something like a private newspaper for the circle of friends, Flipboard is a new formula of a magazine for mobile devices.
Spotify promises a revolution in the music market - it seems that they managed to develop a DRM-based system of legal distribution of music via the Internet.

Taking into consideration the suggestions of people from outside of the industry, for example, Karl Lagerfeld's - a fashion designer who wants, through special shows, to make the Internet a place to create new trends, and Virgin Galactic - offering subscriptions for tourist space travels - we have a nearly complete panorama of LeWeb 2011.
Much of the presentation and discussion was recorded and is available on Youtube. The most popular part of it is a one-hour conversation with Eric Schmidt, the executive chairman of Google.

How to upgrade aging CCTV systems?

To maintain efficient operation of CCTV systems, the owners should modernize them from time to time, changing the video recorders, cameras, monitors.
One of the most advanced DVRs in our offer is Signal DL-8308 M78308. It can record 4CIF (704 x 576) images at 25 fps in each of its eight channels. Multiple levels of security, assignment of individual access rights, stable operation in the network - provide new performance in network management. Additional HDMI output allows for connecting the DVR to a modern monitor or HD-Ready TV displaying high-quality images with the original resolution.

Modern, high quality cameras provide video with resolution over 540 TVL, and all modifications should be based on such devices. The examples of cameras that provide even better results are: Sunell SN-IRC5920AHLDN M11280, Sunell SN-BXC0586DCN(II) M11207, u-cam 630 M11192.
Compact Outdoor Camera: Sunell SN-IRC4920AJ (day/night, D-WDR, 600 TVL, Sony Effio-E, 0.08 lx, 2.8-10mm, OSD, IR up to 40m)

In the case of installing additional camera points, a good idea is to use twisted-pair (UTP) cables in conjunction with passive video transformers (baluns) of Etrix series. The UTP cable can both transmit the video and power the camera, using e.g. the video transmitter-receiver set 1VAP M16659.

MATV systems in areas with difficult reception conditions.

It happens that the parameters of DVB-T signal intercepted by the antenna are not sufficient for its further distribution in the MATV system. The problem usually occurs in areas with poor terrestrial signal levels. The signal received by the antenna cannot be directly amplified or converted to a different frequency due to high BER and low MER levels.

DVB-T signal regeneration is possible when a single receiver connected directly to the antenna allows a relatively trouble-free reception of digital broadcasts. The regeneration process consists of receiving the DVB-T signal, demodulating it to the transport stream, and then re-modulating RF signals as a new COFDM multiplex (frequency converter function). These functions are performed by COFDM-COFDM trans-modulator TERRA ttx311 R81714.
The idea of using the ttx311 R81714 regenerator
An additional advantage of the device is the possibility of modifying transport stream, very useful in hotels, hospitals, correctional facilities etc. The service filtering option allows for cutting out some channels from the DVB-T multiplex.

Network infrastructure for small businesses.

During the renovation of the building, the company owner decided to modernize the network infrastructure in the office, so as to ensure a reliable and stable Internet access for 14 employees.

The network modernization objectives were:
  • stability,
  • minimum structured cabling,
  • broadband access for all employees,
  • possibility of connecting additional hosts.
ULTIMODE Home System is the ideal solution for small businesses, enabling employees to get access to broadband Internet services, including video conferencing. The connection from the service provider is converted into optical form (POF), and distributed to the hosts, using optical switches ULTIMODE POF-8S L6108.

It is much easier to mount the network cables in parallel with electrical wiring than to build separate conduits. It was the decisive factor for choosing POF cables, completely insensitive to electromagnetic fields. They can be laid directly by the power cables, in the same conduits, which is impossible in the case of UTP/FTP cables.

The workstations have been equipped with POF PCI adapters ULTIMODE POF-100NC L6245 connected via POF cable ULTIMODE POF-22 L6521 with the optical ports of the optical switches. The active devices of ULTIMODE Home System ensure continuous and stable operation, the POF cable is characterized by high strength.

A camera with CCD or CMOS sensor?

The image sensor is the most important element of each camera. Its purpose is to convert the light falling through the lens onto the photosensitive elements of the matrix into electrical impulses. Most sensors are produced in CCD and CMOS technologies. Both types are used in CCTV cameras, in standard as well as high definition models. Which of them will be more suited for a specific application?
The biggest advantages of sensors made in CCD (Charged Coupled Device) technology is a high sensitivity and dynamics, as well as low internal noise. This type of sensors is commonly used in analog cameras and high quality IP cameras.

CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) sensors are characterized by a low cost of production (which translates to the final price of the cameras), low power consumption and small size. They are widely used e.g. in mobile phones and IP cameras.

The investor who wants to maximize sensitivity, will choose e.g. IP CCD camera Sunell SN-IPC54/50DN K1620 (0.2 lx). Its counterpart in CMOS technology - IP camera Sunell SN-IPC54/12DN K1630 - has sensitivity of 1 lx. Despite the fact that the CCD camera provides images with resolution of 1.3 MP only (in the case of the CMOS model it is 2.0 MP), it costs 50% more.

How to reduce video archiving costs?

NAS servers enable data archiving in Windows and Unix systems, using e.g. SAMBA or NFS protocols. The total size of memory allocated for data recording depends on the capacity of the hard drives used, their number and the type of RAID array. The type of the RAID array is connected with the selected mode of work:
  • backup of data (for increased reliability of the system),
  • acceleration of data transmission,
  • disk space extension.
The overall configuration of both the cameras and server is performed via a web browser, and the video recording process does not require any additional software. It is an important advantage for video surveillance systems, which lowers installation and maintenance costs, eliminating the need to purchase expensive power-hungry servers or external services.

The architecture of an IP CCTV system based on NAS server
Among the few on the market professional CCTV cameras that can record video on NAS drives there are Sunell products: K1620, K1630, K1650, K1660, K1670, K1680. The cameras and network drives form a fully integrated IP CCTV systems. This type of solutions is a cheap and reliable alternative to dedicated servers with expensive software or costly NVR recorders.

WLAN in a single-family house.

The user who has Internet connection in their single-family house, usually would like to have possibility of using the Internet in various parts of the home or even in its close surroundings such as the garage or garden. To reach that goal, the perfect solution is use of a wireless network (WLAN) operating in 802.11b/g or the latest n standard. Depending on the way of providing the Internet to the house, there may be used different variants of installations.

In the case below, the Internet is provided by a cable television operator via cable modem with Ethernet output, or by a local ISP using Ethernet cable.

The user needs, e.g.:
  • Wireless router (built-in 4-port switch and AP) TP-Link TL-WR340G N2952,
  • High power wireless USB adapter TP-Link TL-WN422G N2921,

DiSEqC - switching between satellites in individual and multiswitch systems. The need for selecting satellite signals from one of two or more LNBs is the reason for the development of dedicated solutions. At the beginning, the switches were operated manually, then the relays were controlled by various methods (e.g. Tone Burst, control signal from SCART). The diversity of the solutions required standardization which was supported by the satellite operator Eutelsat and resulted in DiSEqC standards. The development of the standards went from one-way to bidirectional protocols with recognition of the status of the controlled device (LNB, multiswitch, positioner).

A total surveillance system. At night it detects a man-sized object from a distance of 21 km, from 11 km it can distinguish if the object is a man or something else, and allows to identify human faces from a distance of 6 km...
These are some capabilities of FLIR thermal cameras used mainly by armed forces and services for border protection, as well by specialized security services protecting airfields, airports etc.
The potential of Ranger HRC long range thermal imaging surveillance system is even higher. The portable HRC system typically consists of the first-class thermal camera, color optical camera, laser rangefinder, GPS module and digital magnetic compass. The thermal camera is able to recognize the difference in temperature as small as 0.02 degree Celsius. The second camera for visible light can be equipped with a lens with 120x zoom, allowing to identify human faces much easier than in the case of thermal imaging...
How to choose the best mobile repeater? Most problems with GSM/DCS/3G signals occur in buildings with steel and concrete structures (supermarkets, airport halls), with thick walls (traditional hotels), in underground facilities (parking lots, pubs in cellars etc.), in tunnels.
The solution to this problem is application of a GSM, DCS, or 3G repeater, being a two-way amplifier of wireless cellular signals. To select a suitable repeater, we have to know some facts:
  • The basic information that one should know before purchasing a repeater is the kind of cellular service which will be used:
    • GSM, EGSM - used mainly outside cities, but also in many metropolitan areas; the bands ensure voice connections and low/medium speed Internet connectivity.
    • DCS - used mainly in cities (due to higher capacity of a single base station).
    • WCDMA (3G) - used in cities, ensures high-speed data transmission (HSDPA), video calls and other 3G services.
  • Another important information is how much area is to be covered with the amplified signal...
