DIPOL Weekly Review - TV and SAT TV, CCTV, WLAN

No. 30/2011 (Sept. 26, 2011)

Americans do not want to pay for traditional television.

IHS Screen Digest has published data on the U.S. pay-TV market for the second quarter 2011.
In the U.S.A. there are over 100 million TV subscribers of paid TV services, so it is one of the most important segments of the telecommunications market. According to the report, 625 000 cable TV customers and 109 000 subscribers of pay satellite TV platforms resigned from the services in the second quarter of 2011.
However, the decline of interest in video services provided by cable operators is compensated by new contracts for high-speed data (HSD) services and VOIP. In the second quarter, U.S. operators have gained 270 000 broadband subscribers and 593 000 VOIP customers. It is expected that the increase in interest in these services will compensate for losses related to the outflow of TV viewers for several years yet.
Cable television services are available to about 60 million households in the U.S.A.
The situation is decidedly worse from the perspective of providers of pay-TV via satellites. Noting the decline in the number of subscribers, they cannot boast of increases in other service sectors.

The best situation is on the market of IPTV (Internet Protocol Television), where the number of subscribers is estimated at about 7.9 million. The growth in the second quarter was 366 000 customers. Experts estimate that over the next years the annual growth rate may reach even 20%.
Google gambles on web TV
IPTV growth is a result of the development of broadband data networks and the opportunities offered by television broadcasting over IP networks. The new technology saves customers from paying for entire programming packages, usually overloaded, and allows for flexible adaptation of the offer to the real needs of each customer, including programs on demand (VoD). It also provides inherent means for interactive applications.
Taking into consideration also the fast-growing and conceptually similar OTT television market, it can be concluded that the best years of traditional television broadcasters have gone with the wind...

How to wirelessly send signal from a DVB-S/DVB-T receiver to another room?

In many homes/apartments it is not easy to extend the antenna system and rather not economical to buy another receiver/STB/DVD etc. for the second or third television, especially when the television is used occasionally.
The solution to the problem is the application of wireless transmitter/receiver set sending the audio-video signal from the DVB-S/DVB-T receiver/STB etc. to the another room. The same program can be watched on the "main" TV set, directly connected with the signal source. The main television can also be switched off or show different content played from any other source.
Signal TR-3000 R94110 is a modern audio-video-control transmitter/receiver set. It can cooperate with any device providing suitable baseband audio and video signals, such as satellite receiver, DVB-T receiver, DVD player, multimedia player, analog CCTV camera, etc.
The important advantages of this new model include:
  • 5.8 GHz operating band - less interference in comparison with 2.4 GHz band densely populated by WiFi APs,
  • 4 selectable channels,
  • transmission of IR control signals (from the original or additional RC of the DVB-S/DVB-T receiver) in the opposite direction, from the another room to the "main" room, in order to remotely change the received channel, content etc.

Comfortable operation of small video monitoring systems.

CCTV systems are often used in small companies, offices etc. Aside from the security staff, the monitoring features are also useful for the owners or managers of the places. Although the latest devices provide great opportunities for viewing and managing the CCTV systems online, the control functions are usually too complicated for untrained users.
The most convenient form of accessing the video from CCTV cameras deployed in such facilities is application of regular TV sets. The diagram of such an installation is shown below.

The image from each camera is available on a different channel.
The signal from each of the four cameras deployed in the most vulnerable points of the facility is split by the active video splitter RV-1/2F M1707. One of the split signals is connected to an video input of the DVR, the second to one of the RF modulators. The DVR Hikvision DS-7204HVI-ST/E M71041, placed in a secure location, records the video channels at frame rate of 12 fps. LAN connection enables remote monitoring and management of the DVR via the typical PC platform.
The RF modulators MT41 TERRA R871741 inject the modulated signals to the antenna system with the use of a combiner made of the 6-way splitter Signal R60106. The user of any television connected to the antenna system can watch smooth, full-screen images from the cameras, just by selecting the channels on the TV set. Because the RF signals are modulated by uncompressed video, there is no loss of quality resulting from compression. If necessary, the images recorded on the DVR can be accessed via the LAN, using a PC.
The cabling uses Triset 113 E1015 coaxial cable and dedicated PCT compression connectors ( E3005 and E80340 ).

How to measure the loss of optical fiber?

Using the optical power meter PM-212 L5812, we do it in two steps. First, we connect the meter to a suitable light source (for example - Ethernet media converter M-203G L11025) via the L3211 patch cord and set the measured power level as the 0 dB reference. The next measurement we perform at the end of the fiber link, after connecting to its input the same light source, having the readout in respect to the reference value.

ATR function in cameras with Sony Effio DSP.

Adaptive Tone Reproduction (ATR) improves image quality of scenes with very strong differences in light intensity by adjusting the contrast between the darkest and brightest areas as well as the luminance and tone scale in very bright and very dark areas of the image. It significantly improves detail distinction in these areas which are shown by other cameras as blurred white and black patches.
The influence of ATR function (on the right) on the readability of the image
(A - in the brightest area, B - in the darkest area)

This function is based on changing the brightness and contrast within the image. The brightness processing can be modified by selecting one of the three levels: MID (adjusting the brightness in areas with the highest and lowest brightness levels), LOW (minimum compensation of brightness), HIGH (leveling the brightness within the whole image). The contrast processing has similar settings.

How to create a website with video from a surveillance camera?

Pixord cameras are equipped with built-in web servers allowing users to log on via the Internet. This feature has been enhanced with the possibility of modifying the camera interface and thus creating a website. The content can be modified in the "Customize" tab, including:
  • links to other websites,
  • background color,
  • text color,
  • site name,
  • image caption,
  • logo.

When Fast Ethernet is not fast enough...

Before installing IP cameras, it is necessary to asses the maximum data transfer to the recording server. A megapixel camera can require even 8 Mbps bandwidth, so thirteen such cameras may consume the whole throughput of Fast Ethernet network connection.

The architecture for IP CCTV system with megapixel cameras
The solution for such situations is provided by a Gigabit switch. The ideal devices for transmission of video streams from surveillance cameras are intelligent switches from TP-LINK, which allow for connecting the recording server/computer with twisted-pair cable (GbE: 1000 Mbps) or optical cable (after installing an SFP module).

Signal repeaters for systems with no compromise.

Cellular repeaters directly cooperating with the networks of mobile operators have to fulfill strong requirements for electromagnetic compatibility and reliability, and, which is of the highest importance as they are installed in buildings, have to be compliant with exposure limits for electromagnetic radiation.
Signal repeaters have all these features. We invite you to watch a video explaining the principles of application and installation of the repeaters.

Signal repeaters have been qualified to contest for the outstanding products at the Energetab 2011 trade fair in Poland.
