No. 27/2011 (Sept. 5, 2011)
Cloud Computing storms CCTV.
Is it necessary to build CCTV system based on a DVR? Or pay much for specialized services installing the system and then hire the video surveillance staff? Does one need to pay so much to feel safe?The answer is: No!
There are solutions based on video transmission from the cameras to professional data centers which monitor, process and record the surveillance data.
An agreement between two major players in the security market, Hikvision and the Israeli company NeoVSP, was announced in Tel Aviv on June 30, 2011.
The leading Chinese manufacturer of CCTV equipment has joined the small group of producers that can guarantee compatibility of their products with the modern NeoVSP service.
The leading Chinese manufacturer of CCTV equipment has joined the small group of producers that can guarantee compatibility of their products with the modern NeoVSP service.
The NeoVSP revolutionary solution is a bold and modern approach to the problem of installation and maintenance of CCTV networks. Buying the compatible CCTV system, the customer does not need recording and video processing equipment - both the archiving and intelligent image analysis are performed by NeoVSP software.
The cameras at the customer's site should only be connected to the Internet - the video data is streamed to the server which performs recording and image analysis tasks. At the same time the surveillance staff in the data center monitors the site and, if necessary, alerts the relevant services. The customer can have instant access to the surveillance video through the web (via mobile phone or PC).

The principle of VSaaS (Video Surveillance as a Service) - source: www.neovsp.com
The owner of the site only installs cameras, and is provided with advanced video surveillance features.
It eliminates the problems of the customer with system maintenance or upgrading. The customer or any authorized user can have access to the surveillance video through the web (via smartphone, tablet or PC).
The service provided by NeoVSP company is an example of VSaaS (Video Surveillance as a Service), i.e. the solution based on the idea of minimum customer involvement in the network architecture and purchase of CCTV equipment, except IP cameras. Some other companies operating in this field are Iveda Solutions, OzVision, Connexed, iControl.

If this kind of services provided by professional data centers become more popular, they will seamlessly integrate with other Cloud Computing systems and various areas of life, e.g. care for children, the sick and elderly.

How to correctly measure DVB-T signals?
When installing a DVB-T receiver, many users adjust the antenna position watching the signal "strength" (and/or "quality") line(s) on the OSD page. It happens that users of different models of receivers exchange information on the signal level in a given area, based on such indications of their receivers. And still worse, many installers perform "measurements" of DVB-T signals in antenna systems based on the embedded indicators.The biggest problem is the fact that nobody (except the manufacturer of the receiver) knows how to interpret the indications of the "signal meters" that are expressed in percentage terms or without any measure. When the receiver indicates only the strength (power) of the input digital signal, it may happen that despite a very good indication (90-100%), the picture will freeze or show artifacts. Such situations are often found in antenna systems using amplifiers with excessive gain.
The indications of the received signal in the same antenna outlet shown by three models of DVB-T receivers.
The differences in indications of the built-in signal strength and quality "meters" can lead to wrong conclusions during adjustment of antenna systems.
So, the indications of DVB-T receivers provide only rough estimates of signal parameters. Given the above problems, the installer should perform signal measurements with the use of a professional signal meter. Each measurement should take into account the three basic parameters which have to be within the accepted standards:
- signal level in dBuV (minimum: 48 dBuV, maximum: 74 dBuV),
- bit error rate (BER) - max. 10 E(-3),
- modulation error ratio (MER) - above 26 dB.
Protection of CCTV systems against unauthorized access.
A perfect solution in this area is provided by 4-channel DVRs HIKVISION DS-7204HVI-ST/E M71041.The complete configuration of the DVR can be performed by the network, so it not necessary to connect any local monitor. The settings cannot be easily changed due to password protection and lack of control keys on the front panel.
HIKVISION DS-7204HVI-ST/E M71041
The images from the cameras can be displayed on a local monitor connected via VGA or BNC video output. At the same time, using the network connection, it is possible to perform live monitoring remotely (including use of smartphones) and record additional copy of the video.
Hikvision DS-7204HVI-ST/E M71041 is capable of recording video with 4CIF (704 x 576) resolution at 12 fps (each channel), which is suitable for high resolution CCTV systems with typical frame rate requirements. The standalone device supports all advanced functions implemented in the series, first of all - local recording and network transmission based on H.264 compression. This allows for easy extension of the system in the future, including application of higher models. At the start, the device provides an excellent value for money.
The solution to the problem of voltage surges in CCTV systems.
The problem of damaging CCTV equipment by overvoltages (usually as a result of lightning) can be avoided in two ways.In the case of installations based on coaxial cables, both ends of each line should be terminated with suitable surge protectors. The second way eliminates the problem completely - application of fiber-optic transmission medium. Optical fibers are entirely immune to electromagnetic interference and pulses.
The advantages of fiber-optic transmission lines:
- High capacity - one fiber can transmit video and control signals from up to 16 cameras;
- Compact size and low weight of optical cables allow for much easier and faster installation than in the case of coaxial cables;
- Comparable costs of installation - it should be remembered that aside from the larger number of copper cables, they should be protected against surges on both sides - it applies to the video paths (coaxial cable) and data lines (twisted-pair cable);
- No crosstalk - the electromagnetic neutrality allows for running optical cables in common conduits, together with electric or telecommunications cabling;
- Easy extension of the system in the future, without changing the optical infrastructure;
- Long range of transmission - the signals from cameras can be transmitted even over a distance of 20 km.

How to choose a lens for operation with IR illumination?
The right lens for a camera cooperating with IR illuminator should be IR-corrected. Application of an ordinary lens is the reason for problems with setting proper focus on visible light and infrared.IR corrected lenses render sharp images regardless of the type of light.
The Tokina TVR0616DCIR 6-60 mm M23135 IR-corrected lens has been designed for medium and long distance operation, e.g. for monitoring entrances, gateways, roads etc.
Tokina TVR0616DCIR 6-60 mm M23135
The lens is equipped with automatic iris control allowing the camera to regulate the amount of light passing through, so it is ideal for areas with variable lighting conditions. A wide range of manually adjustable focal length (6 to 60 mm) enables the installer to easily adjust the field of view, depending on the requirements. In the case of cameras equipped with 1/3" image sensors, the angle can be changed within 45o to 4.7o range (horizontally).
Modern video surveillance system at a housing development.
To ensure the safety of residents, the investor decided to build a CCTV system. The requirements for the system included the guarantee of high quality video footage (indispensable for face recognition) and the transmission of data streams via 230 VAC power lines (no extra cables).The task was undertaken by Meganet company.
The installation has been based on megapixel IP cameras from ACTi - TCM-5611 K1060 - which, thanks to mechanical IR filter, provide very good images both during the day and night.
The 1.3 MP day/night cameras ACTi TCM-5611 K1060 have been placed in outdoor housings Marathon M5408, equipped with a heater and thermostat. The components keep the temperature inside the housing above a minimum level suitable for proper operation of the installed camera and eliminate the problems with fogged up pane or lens and excessive humidity.
The transmission over power lines has been implemented with the use of TP-Link TL-PA211 N3357 transmitters (range up to 200 m). All cameras are integrated into a single network using 8-port switch TP-Link N29918. The archiving of the video data is based on the free software included with the ACTi cameras - ACTi NVR.

How to select the best WiFi router?
The necessary feature of a router for a specific application is the availability of the suitable operating mode. When the Internet service provider offers wireless access, the device has to work in WISP mode. In addition, the user should know the maximum transfer rate of the access point and preferably choose the same wireless standard. Especially in the case of video streaming, the best choice is application of devices compliant with the N standard (WiFi speeds up to 300 Mbps).To easily compare TP-LINK routers, we have prepared the table below:
