3D in HD - three-dimensional TV. Korean concern Hyundai is now introducing 46-inch television allowing to watch 3D images in HD resolution. The viewer has to use special glasses. The TV set is another 3D display on the market, but for the first time supported by distribution of adequate signal. Japanese cable TV - BS11 - provides short programs (10 minutes or so) that enable the users to feast their eyes on the third dimension. The television costs about 4800 USD.
The concept of generating moving three-dimensional images has been known for over a hundred years.
To create a sense of tree-dimensional depth, the brain of the viewer has to be given two images, from the left and right eye. The images can be simultaneously recorded by a special arrangement of two cameras, or generated by a computer using appropriate software.
3D displays can be divided into two main groups - those requiring use of special glasses and those "glasses-free". The pioneer of "glasses-free" solutions is Sharp - in 2002 the company developed technology utilizing a special filter placed in front of the screen, known as parallax barrier, which diversified the images viewed by the left and right eye.
The method of generating two images by computer means has been used by Philips (WOWvx). The same method for creating quasi-3d images has been applied by Samsung and Mitsubishi.
DLP televisions from Samsung come equipped with adequate software packages and glasses, which allows to convert standard video into quasi-3D images. Similar technology is available in LaserVue televisions from Mitsubishi.

Half-power beam of terrestrial TV antennas. The angle of the beam (for the actual polarization) is determined by the two points on the antenna's characteristics where signal level decreases by 3 dB in comparison with its maximum value.
In the case of terrestrial antennas, lower half-power beam means better directivity, i.e. capability of rejecting reflected signals. In analog TV these signals are superimposed on the main image as "ghosts" - displaced images on the right of primary video information.
Half power beam is inversely correlated with the length of an antenna.
It is not always sensible to use antennas with narrow half-power beam. Sometimes one wants to use single antenna for receiving signals from transmitters situated in different locations - a shorter antenna with a wider angle will be more suitable then.
In the mountains, where usually there is no visibility of the transmitter, there should also be used antennas with wider beam. This solution gives a chance to receive any signal at all, and the reflections are a necessary evil.

The points of intersection of gain characteristic (the outline of the green area) with -3 dB threshold (the red circle) define the half-power beam in the plane | Vena A3380, with very small half-power beam and high gain, effectively rejects reflected signals. It is a perfect antenna for receiving signals from remote transmitters. |
DaVinci technology. DaVinci platform has been developed by Texas Instruments (TI). It combines DSP-based processors, software, development tools and comprehensive support. Due to the open video platform, the manufacturers of final products can "create unique, feature-rich devices optimized with specific applications in mind and get them to market quickly". It includes any applications of image and video processing.
The DaVinci platform is ideal for CCTV devices, video cameras, video conferencing, set-top boxes. Devices based on DaVinci processors and technology are available (among others) from Humax, Lumenera, Nexvision, Konka.
Processors from DaVinci group can use various codeds: H.264, MPEG-4, H.263, MPEG-2, JPEG, WMA9, VC1, G711, AAC+, G729ab, AAC, MP3.

ULTIMAX - DVR for demanding customers - access policy. To ensure safe operation of CCTV system, the administrator has to grant the users adequate access levels. The staff authorized to analyzing the recorded video should have access to the archives, the operators - to the live images, external users - to the live images from selected cameras. The only person who is able to change the hierarchy is the administrator himself/herself.
In the case of network operation, the locations from which the users can connect with the DVR, as well as their access privileges should be considerably limited.
ULTIMAX DVRs feature more extended and flexible access configuration utility than majority of other recorders in the market. In the administrator menu there is possibility of creating up to 15 users, with individually granted access levels, independently for local and remote operation.

In ULTIMAX DVRs the administrator can grant or block access to a number of functions.
Local control (functions executed from the panel buttons of the DVR):
Local control (functions executed from the panel buttons of the DVR):
- PTZ control,
- manual recording,
- playback and backup of archives,
- local configuration of parameters,
- access to system log,
- access to utility functions.
Remote access levels (via the network) may include:
- PTZ control,
- manual recording,
- remote playback,
- remote configuration of parameters,
- remote access to system log,
- remote access to utility functions,
- remote voice connection,
- remote live viewing,
- remote alarm handling,
- remote change of video output,
- remote control of transparent RS-232 port.
Additionally, entering MAC address of the computer of an individual user, the administrator can limit access to the system to the specific computer.

Remote access to images from any location in the world - IP CCTV devices of PiXORD. Application of IP cameras allows to view the images via any computer connected to the network. Of course, it requires proper configuration of the camera itself and the routers and servers between the camera and the Internet. It applies to the ports used for transmission of images and audio (RTSP protocol usually uses port 554) and the port for managing the camera (HTTP - port 80 by default). In the case of a number of cameras, each of them has to use different port.
The quality and smoothness of the video strongly depends on the parameters of network transmission. In the case of IP cameras, the decisive factor is upload capacity of the network. For example, MPEG-4 compressed video of D1 resolution at 5 fps requires at least 512 kbps, the same at 25 fps - minimum 2 Mbps. To limit bandwidth consumption, it is advised to set "Variable Bit Rate" in the camera and its maximum value to that of the upload capacity of the link.
After the installation and configuration has been successfully performed, any PC with Windows and Internet Explorer 6.0 or later can be used to view the monitored area. At the moment of the first connection the system will require to install ActiveX control for video streaming.

Professional WLAN omnidirectional antenna (vertical polarization) - Pacific Wireless OD58 12dB A73320. The antenna has been designed for base stations where client stations are located around them. It is recommended for distances 1-2 km. The antenna can be directly mounted on a mast.
Relatively high gain despite small dimensions, tough construction that is resistant to weather conditions, and solid mount make the antenna convenient to install and capable of operating for a long time. It is a very good solution for middle-sized WLANs.

LANs - how to test the cabling. The basis for a reliable LAN is properly installed cabling. Any failures of the connections cause problems at the stage of starting-up the system and decrease its reliability in the future. The easiest way of eliminating the problems is to control the connections while doing the installation and crimping the connectors. A very good device for testing cable continuity, identifying wires, detecting shorts circuits and incorrect connections, is multi-network cable tester - N7055
The set consists of two parts - the master and remote part (terminator) - that are used at the opposite ends of the tested cable. Adequate LEDs signal the state of the tested line. The device can be used for UTP/FTP cables terminated with RJ-45 connectors or for telephone cables terminated with RJ-11 phone plugs.
