Just press to order! With "shopping buttons", Amazon, the world's largest online store, brings another revolution in the way customers can order products. Its Dash Button allows any customer to request a specific product by pressing button on the dedicated small device (without the need to use a computer, phone or tablet). The device can be placed anywhere in the home. When the customer wants to order, for example, washing powder, he/she should just press the suitable button located in the laundry. The click will initiate the process from order to shipment and delivery.

Initially, Amazon will offer buttons to order products such as washing powders, coffee, razors, toilet paper, diapers, garbage bags and mineral water. In the future, however, this list is to be increased significantly. Each device with the button has a specific product logo and is adhered to any surface with adhesive tape. The devices connect to the local home network via WiFi. Of course, the user should configure each Dash Button by providing data such as the number of items ordered at a single click.
After pressing the button, the user receives notification on the paired smartphone. The order can be canceled within 30 minutes. But what if one presses the same key, say, 15 times? Nothing wrong, the system processes only the first order, until the customer receives the product. The Dash Buttons, however, are only the first stage of the project. Amazon, in collaboration with manufacturers of household appliances, strives to ensure that such buttons will be inbuilt in washing machines, coffee makers etc. Time will tell how this idea proves to be practical, aside from being only one more form of advertising some products.
Channel amplifiers in shared antenna systems distributing DVB-T. In the case of MATV/SMATV systems in multi-dwelling units such as apartment houses, hotels etc., with tens or more outlets, the application of broadband amplifiers at inputs of the systems is not a proper solution. Only channel amplifiers allow for equalization of all channels and high output levels without a risk of interference.

The amplifiers are highly selective:
40 dB attenuation just 2 MHz outside the channel boundary
Each path of the amplifier is equipped with auto gain control (AGC) and ultra selective SAW (Surface Acoustic Wave) filter. The characteristic in the diagram above clearly shows the high selectivity of the channel amplifier. The automatic gain control equalizes the output level of each channel at 82 dBμV regardless on the input level (on the condition that the actual input signal level is above the minimum required for proper quality).

When the Internet is distributed wirelessly, we need an AP (wireless router) with WISP (Wireless Internet Service Providers) mode enabling configuration of its wireless interface as WAN port, which is necessary to connect the home LAN to the Internet.

Multimode or single-mode fiber? The choice of the type of fibers and equipment for completely new optical systems depends on several factors, first of all:
  • transmission distance - single-mode fibers can be used even for distances of several hundred kilometers, while multimode fibers limit the lengths of the links to 2 kilometers, mainly due to the phenomenon of modal dispersion;
  • link capacity - single-mode fibers in connection with popular active devices allow for data transfer rates of 10, 40 or even 100 Gbps; multimode fibers are much "slower", usually with data rates up to 1 Gbps (in the case of OM4 fiber the transmission speeds over short distances, below 100 meters, can be much higher);
  • cost - someone may think that cables with multimode fibers should be much cheaper than those with single mode ones, but it was true several years ago. Currently, the modern technological processes associated with the production of single-mode optical fibers allowed for significant cost reduction and this type of fiber optic cables is now even cheaper. However, the active devices using single-mode technology are still more expensive than their multimode equivalents.
So, when the choice of a single-mode solution is not dictated by the longer transmission distances or the need for high data rates, the deciding factor should be the total cost of the system in a particular case.

The following table illustrates how the length of an optical link changes the ratio of the costs of single mode and multimode solutions (a link between IP camera and the switch). The estimate takes into account the cost of single-mode and multimode cables and suitable media converters.

In this case, the use of a multimode solution is cost-effective only at short distances. When the length of a link exceeds 50 meters, single-mode solutions are usually cheaper and much more flexible in terms of future extension or modification.
Configuration of recording parameters in Sunell NVRs via a web browser. The configuration of basic parameters of video recording in continuous and motion detection modes in Sunell NVRs is quite simple and should not cause problems even for novice installers. Here are the steps:
  • log on to the NVR via a web browser by entering the IP address of the NVR, User Name (by default: admin), and Password (by default: admin)
  • enter Quick Setup menu -> click on the relevant camera in the Record section
  • Setup of continuous recording:
    • activate Recording Schedule and select24x7H (continuous recording) or Schedule option
    • confirm all settings
  • Setup of motion detection recording:
    • deactivate Recording Schedule (if was activated)
    • activate Alarm Record
    • select Motion Alarm (channel)
    • confirm all settings
    • enter Quick Setup -> click on the relevant camera in the Motion Alarm section
    • activate Motion Alarm, configure Schedule and Motion Area
    • confirm all settings

The setup guarantees seamless operation of Sunell cameras in the selected mode. In the case of other cameras and application of Onvif protocol some options may not be available or working properly.
Monitoring hard drives in Hikvision NVRs. A hard disk failure in the DVR/NVR, though it happens rarely, usually means the loss of all or a significant part of the archive. Modern DVRs/NVRs and HDDs offer features that minimize such risks. Hikvision NVRs support S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology) function that monitors the operation of hard drive(s) and notifies the system operator of a risk of failure.
S.M.A.R.T monitors the following disk parameters:
  • number of start/stop cycles
  • number of corrected ECC errors
  • temperature
  • number of seek errors
  • number of errors in Ultra DMA mode
  • total operation time

The S.M.A.R.T. function offers increased security of data archiving. The DVRs are able to assess the condition of the installed hard drive(s) and, if symptoms indicate the possibility of data loss or disk failure, the operator of the system is immediately alerted. In addition to the real-time disk monitoring, the operator can test the disk(s) on demand. The test options include "Short Self Test" detecting most of possible problems, and significantly longer (up to an hour) "Extended Self Test" which carefully examines all disk parameters.
